OK, so a head gasket blew and I continued to run it awhile ( I know, bad decision!) Got it apart, lots of thick goop in intake. Incidently had to pull the whole engine out as that right rear head bolt would not clear. Does that sound right? Checked heads they are OK. Looks like maybe water got in to a combustion chamber and maybe bent a rod as there seems to be quite a bit of play in one piston. Is this engine worth saving? Should I just remove the pan and replace the bad rod? Would it likely have damaged the crank? Yikes, are we getting into "short block" time. Anyone who has been there, I would appreciate your insights.
Thanks, Bruce
You really need to pull the motor apart. Check that rod first. These pistons all come up out of the cylinders anywhere from 10 to 31 thousands. Check all of them before you take them out. Measure the center of the pistons to get the best accurate results. That cylinder that lost the gasket needs to have the deack checked for holes where the fire burned accross it. How many miles are on the motor ? was it rebuilt and bored out before you got it? Be sure you replace the oil cooler o-rings while you have the motor out. If it was me and I was that far into it I would do at least a basic rebuild.Bore it,sleeve it,do the bearings(main, rod, and cam),have the heads done, new gaskets and head bolts(I don't care what people say,you should never reuse these). Then you should be good for another 300,000 to 500,000 miles.

If you live in CA, I would look up a junkyard call "pick-n-pull" They're a corporate company based somewhere in your state. Any motor you pull is 99 bucks- LT1 from a caprice, northstar motor from a caddilac, 90 model IDI, and so on. Bring a buddy and your tools... and go to town!

These engines are pretty robust, my son put mine in a canal a couple of years ago and bent 3 rods. Did not hurt the lower end. Depending on the mileage and how extensive a rebuild you do, be prepared to spend 4 to 5 k by the time you are done. He dosen't drive it anymore.

I'm, hoping the price is so steep because you had someone else do all the work. You can buy a complete rebuild kit for my engine for around 1200+shipping, i ordered this kit but it was a little more because i had them swap out the pistons that where included for the Mahle low comp ones. The rebuild kit included everything, even a brand new cam.
Ive seen the kits go up to 1500 with the same stuff included.
The kit is just the beginning. Boring the block, new or rebuilt IP, new injectors, head work and on and on. No I did all the work my self. I did just swag a number deducting for installing a Dana 60 and other incidentals. He did after all jump a burm in order to get in water up to the hood. In short my number may have been a bit high, but the final # may surprise you. That is about what I paid for the kit.
