Rebuilt Heads, wont start. Timing Changed during rebuild?

I have read LOTS and still feel cross eyed... so hopefully you all won't get mad at me for starting a new thread about my condition

I have just got done replacing the head gaskets and heads (rebuilt) on my truck.

Now that it is all bolted together, it wont start.

I bleed the air from the fuel lines, made sure it was pumping enough fuel and PSI...

I have verified the glow plugs work and the controller is functioning properly.

Charged both batteries, they crank strong

I even plugged in the block heater for an extra measure

BUT all I get is a fast spinning diesel (starting) with some white smoke out the exhaust. I think that is the key to solve my problem...

Did my timing get changed while I had it apart? i did not rotate the engine and did not remove the oil fill housing...

Im banging my head on the wall to get the life back into my truck!

Any help is appreciated...

Thanks

Did you verify the valve timing before you installed the IP. Could be the IP timing.

Thumbs up great source of information

Look at CDNSARGUY's gallery. He has tons of info. Maybe the crank moved ever so slightly and the IP is off a tooth or so. I have a manual (chiltons) for our truck and if you need some other info that isn't in the gallery, If I have it I can e-mail it to you, just pm me.

Did you remove the timing gear cover with the IP........ Read Ziggster's info

"Talk about Timing!!"

The timing mark is found on a little plate that is on the front of the engine on the passenger side. The plate is mounted so it is very close to the main pulley on the lower front of the engine which is mounted on the vibration damper. On the side of the vibration damper, is a line, which when lined up with the line marked (O) on the plate, tells you that the #1 piston is at TDC(top dead center) You can see the line on the damper, and it points to the line on the plate with the (barely visible)O mark on it.You'll have to find a way to turn your engine over by hand (Crank/harmonic balancer bolt). Make sure you remove the power wire to the injection pump(so the engine won't start)and then rotate the engine until you can line up the marks.
The engine rotates in a clockwise direction as seen from the front of the truck, and for every 1/4 turn of the engine(crank) each next piston will arrive at TDC. So, When the line on the vibration damper is at the 2 oclock position, cylinders 2 and 5 will be at TDC. When the mark is at the 5 oclock position, cylinders 7 and 6 will be at TDC, 8 oclock has cylinders 3 and 8 at TDC, and back to 11oclock, 1 and 4 will be at TDC.
Cylinder numbers are assigned 1,3,5,7 on the left (passenger USA) bank from front of truck to back, and 2,4,6,8 on the driver's side (USA), front to back. Firing order is 1,2,7,3,4,5,6,8.
OK all the above is true...... to ensure the #1 piston is at TDC compression remove the inspection cover on the oil filler/gear cover. You will see a dowel pin from the IP if it is at 4 oclock that is TDC compression stroke, if it is at 11 oclock that is TDC exhaust stroke.......

If you did not remove the oil fill housing, then the IP should not be able to be out of timing if you aligned the marks, the valve timing should not be able to be off either. I think the question is why did you rebuild?

I just did my head gaskets, I rotated the engine several times while things were apart, runs great.

Ok, now that is not in the triple digits, im back to my truck

Check the timing, looks good

I rebuilt the heads while it was apart because 3 of the valve seals were leaking.

No, I did not remove the timing gear cover.

I have not replaced the IP or injectors, or turned the engine while rebuilding. It ran fine before disassembly (except for cyl #6 full of coolant, thanks to blown head gasket)

Am I just a Nit-Wit for not getting something obvious to get my truck going again?

You said you did a compression test on the engine once the heads where on?

Also, are you 100% sure the bad head gasket was causing your cylinder to fill up with coolant?

No compression check yet, but I will do it because i have no idea what is preventing it from running.

Yes, i'm sure it was the head gasket that failed.

Where are the IP and oil filler housing timing lines in relation to each other...... they can be found on the top of the respective items where bolted together......they should be aligned at the top..... if the IP mark is to the drivers side it would be retarded if to the pax side of the oil filler mark it is advancing.... One dimes width is a significant timing change of about 3-4 degrees.

White smoke sounds like retarded timing.

See my IP timing mark pic here.... not well defined mark due to a rebuild so it was changed and remarked.

I see what you mean.

I only get white smoke out of the Crankcase ventilation hole on the Intake Valley Pan for the last 6 or so tries...

I wish I had a Camcorder with audio, so I could take a short video and post it up here for you guys to view it and critique and hopefully get a better idea of whats wrong.

Thanks to you all for all you help so far!

Well Hell

I got so pissed off at the truck tonight after adjusting the IP timing and no change in the situation, I got a can of brake cleaner and shot a mist down the intake while cranking and it fired on 3 cylinders.

SO, that tells me I have a fuel delivery problem... but still don't really know what to do...

I was reading on dieselmann's site about diagnosing these diesels, but lost the page came some be so kind to link me to it again?

EDIT: Found Link!
