relay question???????????????

The relay seems to not want to work well today, the one by the pass valve cover by the turbo (94 IDI turbo) I think it is for the glow plugs,it clicks when the light goes off,if it does not click the truck will not start,a slight tap with a screw driver it clicks and fires right up,what is the relay for or called so I can find a replacement.

Thanks,Tim

Re: relay question???????????????

That'd be your glow plug relay.

It look like this?

When you say the truck will not start unless it clicks, do you mean the starter won't even engage, or the engine will turn over, but just not start?

If the starter doesn't even engage, that's your starter relay. It's basically the same type relay.

When changing out either of these relays be very carefull with the big wires going to it, they are connected directly to the battery and will short out violently on anything and everything.

Re: relay question???????????????

Sounds like the glow plug relay, if they can't find just the glow plug relay ask for a starter relay, it should do the job.

I guess I should have specified,it is NOT the starter relay, that one is on the fender,It looks like the one in the pic with 2 small wires going to it,when it does not work the truck just cranks,no start,as soomn as I get it to click it will fire right up.

Re: relay question???????????????

First thing, check that your power and ground connections are all good, clean and tight. You might be jiggling a connection when you tap on the relay.

Other than that, the coil in the relay is probably just getting weak or is sticking.

Re: relay question???????????????

There was a post about the GP Relay a while back. The GPrelay is slightly different from the starter relay, wired differently inside, and a starter relay will not work. The GP relay is quite a bit more expensive. If I remember correctly, $55.00 . OkieG

I would say it just needs replaced, the truck has 209,000 miles on it,all the connections are good.
