Replaced my rear brakeline and now I have a fuel leak!

Hi All,

Well, a while back I had a panic-stop in a parking lot and popped a hole in the brakeline that runs from the RABS Valve to the rear brakes.

I bought a 25' coil of line at NAPA, a new RABS Valve, (mine was a little lump of rust) cut and removed the old, rusty line and threaded the new line along the frame rail, where the OEM one ran.

Flared, connected, bled and all was well until...

I smelled diesel!

Looked under the truck to see fuel was leaking from the middle of the front tank area.

At $3.00 a gallon here in spendy SE WI that's just not going to cut it.

A buddy of mine had a similiar leak. I'm guessing I broke something while I was threading the new line in there.

Any ideas? The tank is full and is plastic. I doubt I punched a hole in it. I was planning on burning as much fuel as I could, maybe to the point of starvation, and then switching to the rear tank. Then I can work on an empty and light tank.

Tomorrow I will switch to the rear tank just to isolate the problem to the front tank lines only. It it still leaks then I must have broken something common to both tanks, like the supply line to the engine.

Is this going to be a PITA to repair?

I've let this truck sit for almost a year with no brakes and have really worked hard these past few days to get her back on the road. I had to, I can't afford to put any more gasoline in the POS Van I have been driving.

Also, I have one heck of a leak from my oil-pan drain plug.

The original plastic gasket was shot so I went to my local AutoZOne and asked for a replacement. They gave me a nifty little copper gasket that does not seem to be doing a whole heck of a lot. Any ideas? I'd like to elmininate at least one of the two leaks I have.

Thanks and it's good to be burning diesel again!

Re: Replaced my rear brakeline and now I have a fuel leak!

Got your information - thanks!

Looks like it's leaking at the Sender Unit. Not the lines, looks like where the steel lines come out of the cap.

Okay, will need to drop the tank and take it from there but...

This is nothing compared to what I discovered about my oil pan...

(See new post)

Thanks,
Carm*

Re: Replaced my rear brakeline and now I have a fuel leak!

Just fixed a leak like that. There are metal couplings between the fuel tank and the switchover valve. Cut the steel pipe in half. The lines are made of plastic with rubber over them. Cut off an inch of the rubber with out damaging the plastic line. But some 3/8 fuel hose and a couple of SS clamps, and make the connection.
