I done a search but nothing real clear. I am very mech. inclined but with anything new I like to get all info needed. I am rebuilding pump and replacing injectors in my 94 factory turbo idi. I need timing marks, engine postion anything to make this job headache free. I am scribing a line from housing to pump housing for correct placement on assembly. Thanks

You don't need the motor in any particular position. You DO need to mark the top gears' position in relation to the timing cover, and not turn the motor with the IP removed.

impressive write up... whatever u do... don't remove that front cover with the oil filler neck. once ya do that then u do need to mess around with all the timing and getting the engine to TDC.

CHstang, that is not accurate. You had problems because you didn't mark your gears and/or you turned the motor. In other words you didn't follow the documented procedure.
I've done the job more times than not by removing the tower complete, and have never had any problems.
