Howdy yall! I've had my rig for almost 2 months now and I've replaced the glow plugs, return lines/orings, both fuel senders, and the switching valve. Hot or cold starts don't seem to make a difference. If the engine runs for a while and is shut down for a few mins it will fire up no problem, but if it sits for a couple of hours or overnight it takes a couple tries and theres alot of blue/gray smoke when it finally catches, then it idles rough for a couple of seconds then it smoothes out. The truck runs great and doesnt consume alot of oil (about 1qt every 1000mi or so)so hopefully its nothing major. Anybody else got that prob? IP or supply or just the nature of the eng?

Sounds like a fuel problem... like a slow air leak that is allowing the fuel to leak back to the tank from the engine. Fuel supply lines might need replacing, make sure you don't have an air leak at the fuel filter, maybe even a hairline crack in metal fuel lines.

Couple of things. How long does the "Wait To Start" light stay on when the engine is cold in the morning? You said you replaced the glow plugs but there may still be something wrong with that system. Another thing to do is get a piece of clear line (Home Depot etc) and put it in place of the retun line running from the filter head. This will allow you to see if there are any air bubbles in the system. You can also tell if there is a restriction in the return line system to the tanks if you see the fuel flowing toward the filter head. Have you checked the pressure and volume at the schraeder valve? cdnsarguy has the test in his gallery. If the engine is running fine once started then I wouldn't suspect the injection pump until you eliminate a few other things. This is not the nature of the engine, it should fire right away and not have the stumble you are describing. Let us know what you find.

Alrighty, I think I got it figured out: It seems to be leaking fuel out of the top of the fuel filter head around the black plastic fitting with a broken wire. Fuel trickles out when the engine is revved, so when the eng stops, the sp stops and it could pull air in through that right? Like most everything else, I'll probably seek out the parts counter at my friendly neighborhood Ford dealership, hope it works!

Ok, before I drop another $$$ on OEM fuel system parts... Are there any O rings or seals on that little black plastic thing or is that made into the filter head?
