Running out of gas...

If you run out of gas, what is the best thing to do to get the air out of the system? Just turn it over until it starts? Happy T-day!

Re: Running out of gas...

crank it and push that schrader valve on the fuel filter bracket in. once fuel shoots out, then u should be good.

Re: Running out of gas...

You're not supposed to have gas in it anyway. If you run out of fuel, remove the filter, fill with clean fuel, reinstall, crank for a moment, bleed air from fitting on filter housing, crank again, should start. Kevin

Re: Running out of gas...

Cjhstang has the best answer... leave filter as is and use the Schrader valve to purge air until fuel is present, allow starter to cool 2 minutes. Now continued cranking for 15-20 seconds with foot to floor may be required after filter is full.

Re: Running out of gas...

i agree with cjhstang and cdnsarguy i have been unlucky 2 and ran it out of fuel. again just use the schrader vavle till fuel shoots out. then follow cdnsarguy with the rest of what he says to do.

Exactly what i did both times(no need to mess with fuel filter.

Re: Running out of gas...

no you post works just as good haha
its just alot easier using a screwdriver or a pen and bleed fuel to the schrader valve(once you put fuel in the tank of course)

Re: Running out of gas...

dakotajeep........ No C- but first choice is the KISS principal, especially when you stuck on the side of the main route through town at rush hour getting a hand full of fingers. Not many of us are equipped to R&R a filter on the road side.

Re: Running out of gas...

Yeah, I was being sarcastic....my filter is like an oil filter and comes off by hand....the diesel mechanic put it on....Although, I do have the original setup/parts....

Re: Running out of gas...

If your driving a diesel, you should have a spare filter and the means to change it.

Re: Running out of gas...

So when you get a bad tank of diesel and it clogs up your filter you have a means to change it and be on your way... This is a BIG thing if you decide to put biodiesel in, that first tank will clean up EVERYTHING and clog that filter up very fast..

Re: Running out of gas...

I should add, I tell my customers to carry a spare fuel filter, serpentine belt, and on some vehicles, a CMP and a belt tensioner. The parts are usually the old ones we have replaced before they failed. I tell them, even if you don't have the tools to replace these parts on the road, a tow truck driver or another motorist will. I know I'd rather have these common parts under the seat if something goes wrong. Kevin
