runs rough going downhill

All, I have kind of a weird problem. We have a mile or so downhill stretch that when I go down - the engine starts running rough. It usually starts about halfway down and then continues for a short while after I hit the bottom.

Any thoughts about what might be causing that? Should I worry about it at all?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might have.

Re: runs rough going downhill

Are you using your engine as a brake with your foot off the fuel pedal. How steep is the hill.... is there any smoke visible.

Re: runs rough going downhill

Usually I keep my foot on the gas pedal, since my gearing is low - it doesn't usually coast downhill at 65, so I give it a little fuel. The hill doesn't have any signs, so I'm guessing they do that at 15% in Cali? Just verified that it's a 7% grade, and I believe it's about a mile long. I thought I saw smoke once, but it's really hard to tell at 65. I could probably have a buddy follow me down if that would help.

Thanks!

Re: runs rough going downhill

Also, I have been switching fuels around - was using the cheap diesel guy - then had idle fluctuation issues - Brother in law had a spare commercial fueling card so I used that for a few months without issues. Also use b20 ocassionally as I hear it clears out the crap. Maybe it cleared the crap into the fuel filter? changed the fuel filter at about 10k miles ago. Also -noticed that there is an open metal pipe by the fuel filter - thought it might have been a vaccum thing - then realized that I think it's the water drain - my replacement fuel filter doens't have a water sensor tap on it - cuz I busted it when removed the old filter. So I have a fuel filter with no water sensor connection and an open pipe - maybe drain? It's connected to the pipe via ziptie and separated by a rubber space to the pipe that goes to the top of the fuel filter.
Can take pics if that helps.

Re: runs rough going downhill

pic of tube

I had a better angle this morning and was able to follow the tube - it's basically a drain. I believe it used to be connected to the water separator section of the fuel filter.

I had same problem awhile back with a different motor than what I've got now. It was also a 7.3 idi though, it was out of time real bad hope this helps.
