First of all I would like to say Howdy! to all of you and thank this forum and you for what I have learned so far just reading.
I have a F250 XL 460 4spd 4x4 with a little over 45k miles on it. It is in good shape and has the pop-up ball in the bed for goose neck and the 3 balls on rear. It has a block heater and runs real good, no smoke and a lot of power. I am selling it for 3,000.00 and buying a F350 XLT 7.3L 5spd, Crew cab with 190k miles on it. It has new glow plugs, Alternator, water pump and a few other items I can't recall. It runs good and I will paying 1200.00 for it.
Is this a good deal? I will have to use it to pull a 20' trailer from Arizona to California with my GPA's stuff (my GMA just passed away) a few days ago.
Where can I learn all the specs on this engine and or the truck without spending money? Thanks to all of you for your time. JASTECH
Tough choice, hard to get rid of a truck with that many balls.
Sorry, I realize that is juvenile and is in no way helpful.
At 190K, if it is an automatic I would be concerned about the tranny. I picked up my 1991 E-350 with 184K, at 188K I was getting the E40D rebuilt (~$2200). X2 if the truck has spent a lot of time pulling, my van doesn't even have a hitch. From what I've read/heard, the stock E4OD behind the diesel is only good for about 100K, especially if doing a lot of towing.

The generic answer that you have probably read so far is this. First off list more details about each vehicle, include: year and tranny
Check the coolant for Supplemental Cooling Additives (use the search function for SCA's on here to find out more!). If this is found to be out of specifications then run away since the block could be pending cavitation.
x2 on the tranny (if its and auto). Who knows what state it is in. You should ask if it was rebuilt.
Is this diesel a 4x4?
That should be a start. The 460 is probably going to have more "snort" for pulling compared to a naturally aspirated 7.3L.

Hmm, sorry I forgot the 5spd on the F350, I corrected the post. If I may, are there any add-ons for the 88' 7.3L for better millage or power. I read on here that the turbo didn't increase the millage on those rigs posted. I think it's too old for one of them program things as I can't locate one for an 1988. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, JASTECH
I used to have an '86 gasser with a 460/C6. I put LOTS of mods on it to pull the 5er in my sig that weighs about 8K unloaded. I was getting about 8MPG on the flats ( we didn't discuss the hills). It did SH** and git. The truck in my sig get about 13MPG pulling the 5er on the flats ( still don't talk about the hills much). When I bought my '94 I likened it to trading in the mustangs for a set of mules. HYPERMAX makes a pulse turbo system that claims 3+ MPG gains towing. I am seriously considering it. I loved my gasser but I am happier with the Diesel.

Hands down the best sure fire way to have a more powerful 7.3/6.9IDI is to give it a turbo. Post after post thats the consistant response to the power question.....and since these engines are mechanically driven there wont be and arent any aftermarket chips for them.....

chuckster57, I looked it up 1700.00. Can I put that on your credit card please please:-)
And thanks for the reply. I am trying to learn diesel after years working on Hot Rods and a mechanic for Bad Boys Toys years ago. So please bare with me.
dakotajeep, Thanks for the input. I am trying to get my F250 4x4 sold so that I can purchase the F350 Labor Day weekend as I have to go to a dog show in Utah and he will meet me there with the F350.
dakotajeep, Thanks. Looks like I will be picking it up about 8 hours away and will have a ride up so I hope it will get me and my family home safe. Another question if I may, He said it has a 5 speed with over drive. So is that the 5th gear or is it something added on from the factory? I do think everything is factory on it except for the Kenwood CD player and he said trailer mirrors. Where can I find the manual online that can be downloaded for free? Thanks again for your help, this forum is great even for someone that is use to spark plugs, LOL

SURE . Just promise to make the monthly payments on time
Did you look for the right one? it depends on what cab/tranny you have.

chuckster57, Thank You for the link. Money is really tight right now so I am even selling my 8-Dog trailer. I will try going to the local dealer out here and ask them to print me the engine HP/Torque, payload and towing specs. If it breaks down on me coming back after picking it up I would like the manual to try and fix it. I will take some tools with me from the "Spark Plug" tool box. Thanks, JASTECH
I thought you were looking for the owners manual. If you are in need of repair info I have the Chilton repair manual for '87-'96 f-series trucks. You can get it from any major auto parts store. If you need info if you break down on the way home, I would be happy to give you my cell phone # . I have ATT and if you do to its free mobile to mobile, just PM me.

I will be using it to pull my 20' trailer that has a bumper mount. He said this truck only has the 5th wheel set up so I will need to find me a after market front bumper/guard do to all the deer and in case I have to push a Chevy:-) Also a rear bumper to match with the 2" Heavy Duty receiver on it.
