So I'm ready to put the lifter in a see how it does. I'm asking one more time.
If I do not change the head gaskets and bolts at 140,000 am I asking for trouble? Money is a serious issue. I need to put an exhaust on it too.
I'm thinking og getting the 02+ PS tailpipe and running 4"straight to a full flow muffler and 4" from the Y to the muffler. I should be able to do that for <$200.

If you did not remove any of the head bolts and you see no reason to change the head gaskets, then don't change them. It is your call. You will not be very happy if you don't change them, after you drive 1200 miles and blow a gasket. I would change them if it was my truck. Skip the exhaust for now. That is my take on the situation.

My take would be: due to the fact you are not sure what may happen after the lifter replacement and running why do heads now. If you have a problem again with the lifter and have to redo the engine then you will be required to do head gaskets again.

Greg, I agree with Pete. If you were to have to do headgaskets at some future point, at least you won't have to touch the lifters. Unless you have a leak, may as well get all the life out of them you have coming to them.
I'd leave them be since the 7.3 didn't have nearly the head gasket problems of the 6.9. Doesn't mean you won't blow one at some point, but I wouldn't expect it to be right away. Unless, that is you see them weeping already at the edges, then go ahead and change 'em.
