Re: smell
Do a test on the guage.....the heat guage sender is on the block just in front of the left head, it has a straight connector. Key on engine off.
Remove the connector place a 73 ohm resistor between the connector and ground, the needle should move to the low side of the guage. Now Aubrey and I did some tests a longtime back, if you put a 36 ohm resistor in between the connector and ground the guage should read in the center of normal.
Now if you want to test the sender, (cold) using a ohm meter put the + lead on the sender where the connector goes on and the - lead on the brass portion of the sender you should get.......
73ohm cold engine and,
about 38 ohm on a hot engine (not running.
To see if the overheat operation works ground the overheat sender connector (left hand head front lower corner) to ground and watch the guage.... key on engine off and watch for the check engine light too.
Of course do all the checks of coolant level and overflow tank operation, cap is 13lbs and working, tstat is a Ford or IH only....
Post back with observations/results.
May want to do a fan test too.....visit my gallery.
