smoke at idle

Last spring truck went to missing, bought a new set of stanadyne injectors, pulled the four on the left found one missing the tip. Replaced those four plus the return lines and o-rings, truck ran great with no problems till about mid summer. After coming off the high idle it would blow blue smoke and really smell like raw diesel, didn't hurt performance or milage all that much, mainly a idle problem. Got fed up enough last week because I couldn't even idle the thing without it killing anything around the exhaust pipe and it was even running rough at a idle. Today put the other four injectors, return lines and o-rings it and still have the same problem. High idle is about 1100 rpm with no smoke and runs perfect, idle is around 650 blue smoke and runs rough, IP has about 50,000 miles on it. Truck uses very little oil, I'm sure the smoke is diesel because it smells so strong.

Re: smoke at idle

Since you replaced the 4 old ones and it made no difference I would suggest removing the first 4 and having them checked.

You could loosen the line cap nut 1/2 turn on the older one's one at a time then tighten, to see if there is one that does "not" make a difference in idle performance or the smoke goes away. Caution fuel is under pressure, cover the injector cap nut with a cloth and/or wear eye protection.

Re: smoke at idle

You might also want to get your timing checked.

Re: smoke at idle

replaced the other 4 injectors this morning, made very little differance. Also replace the batteries and cables, tired of working on the thing now, hopefully what ever the problem is it will explode and fall out on the road, then it will be easier to find.

Re: smoke at idle

umm, new injectors without replacing the pump?

Ever hear of the fiber ring in the IP dissinagrating? I wouldn't waste my money on just injectors. They should be replaced together.

Try getting them tested. I hope your OK

Re: smoke at idle

I'm sure there is plenty more wrong with it. Everytime something does go wrong there is about 6 things that all tie together from fiber rings or the right brand of glow plug or some magic sender somewhere. I get a service truck about every 2 1/2 years, this is the second IDI, before that is was gas chevy's. The milage with the IDI's have been nice but the repair's have cost alot in time and money. After this one it will back to the land of spark plugs.

Well, I've never heard about the fiber ring in the IP disintegrating...

Re: smoke at idle

The problem turned out to be timing, When the truck was cold the high idle and timing advance was on , so no smoke. When the truck would come off of high idle it would also lose timing advance and the smoke would start rolling out. I knocked the timing advance wire off when I put in the new injectors so the next morning the truck ran awfull even at high idle, later in the day I saw the wire hanging loose then it started to make sense. I let the engine warm up, idle and smoke like always then ran a jumper wire to the timing advance and no more smoke. The truck runs about as good as it ever has now, next project is the clutch.

Re: smoke at idle

If I read your last post correctly, you have a jumper to the Timing advance continually now. If so this is wrong, it should only be on when the fast idle is on. If the few degrees afforded by the timing advance being powered makes that much smoke difference then move the timing of the IP 1/16" advanced (rotate to pax side). Then remove the jumper wire and allow the Fast idle and Timing advance to operate as designed.........

The Engine Temperature Switch provides voltage to the Cold Timing Advance Solenoid and the Cold Idle Solenoid. When the engine temperature is below 112 °F (44 °C), the Engine Temperature Switch is closed. When the Ignition Switch is turned to START or RUN, the solenoids are energized, advancing injection pump timing and engine idle, allowing the engine to run more smoothly when cold. When the engine temperature reaches 112 °F (44 °C), the Engine Temperature Switch opens. This denergizes the solenoids, returning the timing and idle to normal.

Re: smoke at idle

After the jump wire trick, I did advance the pump and hook the orignal wire back to the timing advance. Starts and runs very good now, no smoke at idle.
