Smoky IDI

OK, I'm rolling down the road at a constant 50-55 mph.

Trucks starts audibly "rattling", and exhaust starts putting out thick gray-to-black smoke screen, and truck accelerates to 60 mph. Then, it stops smoking etc on its own.

Once, I pulled off, and the coolant temp was up substantially on the OEM guage.

Is this the hi pressure fuel injection pump going bad?

Thanx,

This was exactly the truck I was looking for...

now 282,000 miles & 6 yrs (factory reman engine @ 119K miles)
14.5 mpg @ 65 mph cruise control & AC

Casually looking for a good used overdrive....

Real trucks don't have spark plugs!

OK - upon thinking about it I have more clues....

This occurred while the AC was on.

Today I drove the same route, same way, without AC. No problem.

And I realized that I haven't been hearing my engine cooling fan kick in...

And my AC isn't producing what it should....

Somehow - this is heat related.

One fan clutch coming up....

It sounds like the pump went way advanced for a bit, perhaps?

Replaced the fan clutch. Good, but didn't solve this problem.

Embarrassing, but changing the oil seemed to fix it....

To much fuel

The smoke along with the hot motor sounds like a over fueling situation and or not enough air. Have you check your air filter and air inlet hoses. I have a open air filter and I used the 4" plastic hose on the back side of my air filter for several years and it work until one day it collapsed under acceleration ( I thought the motor went ) I am not a injector expert, but could one or two injectors hang open and dump to much fuel in the chamber(s) when it should not, which could cause overfueling, resulting in the black smoke and high EGT's?
