spindle & rotor HELP

me being the king of procrastination, let my bearing get melted to the drivers side spindle. i heard it squeaking a bit but i thought that "oo its not too bad, ill get it this weekend" , well when i was driving home from work, i turned a corner and it sounded like the wheel was about to fall off. so i crawled home and took the wheel off, and the bearing is pretty much gone and i cant get the rotor off.

does anybody know how much it costs to have someone fix/replace the rotor and spildle, one guy quoted about 485$ with alignment, is that a reasonable price?

thanks kevin

Re: spindle & rotor HELP

4x2 correct.......

Did you remove the outer nut and bearing, if so just push the rotor and hub in as far as possible then jerk it back out with all your might. I bet it's the outer bearing right..........if so you may need a torch. Can't see that amount of money required to burn off two bearings, replace seal plus 2 bearings and lubricate. No alignment required??? I would seek a second opinion......should be about $150-200 MAX. including tow to shop if you have AAA.

Re: spindle & rotor HELP

the guy i brought it to, he finally got the rotor off and he said and i saw that the spindle was turning a purple color, and he said that it may be warped. so he will have to redo the ball joints and get a new spindle so does 485 sound about right for all that

thanks and merry christmas,
kevin

If he is telling you the ball joints need to be done because the spindle needs to be replaced he is screwing you,now thats not to say the ball joints are not bad, just that the 2 are unrelated when it comes to replacing one or the other.

Re: spindle & rotor HELP

If the spindle doesn't have any cuts or gouges in it just stick it back together and run it. You can find good used spindles if that's what you need. If you heat a spindle to cut off a bearing it will turn bluish purple. I would doubt you got it hot enought driving it to bend it. I thinl the mechanic smells some easy money.

Re: spindle & rotor HELP

I agree just have the bearings etc replacd and put it back together. Tell the mechanic if any problems arise you can bring it back later when Christmas is over........$$$$ are short right now.

Re: spindle & rotor HELP

i did this same thing to an f150.

by the time we got the spindle cleaned up it looked pretty rough.

i went to a local truck junkyard, and they sold me the whole wheel assembly, ball joints and out for $35.
