Start then no start?

My ford has progresively gotten worse.

The history is:

A few months ago i noticed that it took more time to trun over than usual, I wrote this off as a battery issue. I thought it was a battery issue because I would clean the post, the starter would turn harder then it would crank. Then it got worse and worse, I also noticed that it would crank cold fine, then it would crank again easily within a few min of turning off. But if you waited 30 min or more it would not crank. Now if you waited a few hours it would crank.

I thought that this was a battery/starter issue. My thought was that the ford needed to turn at a high rpm to crank. But then it got to the point that it would not crank even while turning at a high rpm, even with a jumper on it to another diesel, or to my 200 amp battery charger in start mode.

So im thinking it is not battery or starter now. Im thinking engine or injection.

Im also noticing less power and the engine sputters like the sound of a miss.

Any advise?

I thought starter/battery for awhile, but as it gets harder to crank, it is running more rough/power loss also.

Have you checked for fuel pressure and volume........

Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when starter cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of starter engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose. When all finished hook up the FSS wire .

If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm. Check my photo link for lift pump differences.

Update

I have not checked the fuel pressure/volume yet, but i did replace the filter. Then i cranked it, when I got it cranked, it runs way rough now, and smokes up my entire neighborhood.

My thoughts are that the filter was restricting the fuel, but now injectors are leaking and with the increased fuel pressure, they are leaking more and causing the white smoke. Im mean it smoked before and smelled of fuel, but since I changed the filter it is much worse.

Any thoughts on this?

Did you turn the filter tight enough.....+ 1/4 turn after hand tight. Did you install the 2 sealing rings (1 oring and 1 lip seal) using lubrication. Have you shut the drain valve.

Smoke is usually an air leak or the timing is stuck in an advanced position. Disconnect the rear wire drivers side on the IP. See if that changes anything.......

sounds like your sucking air in from somewhere. how much fuel do you have in the tanks and also swap from one tank to the other and does that change anything. have you tried running a good dose of diesel kleen through it?
