Ok, I know this has been beat to a bloody pulp, but I still have one question (slow learner). Shorty is currently on the operating table getting the diesel equivalent of a CPAP machine (HM turbo). While waiting for my IP to come back fron Ken, I thought I'd change out the starter as it was starting to crank slower on a warm motor (sign of impending doom, right?) and it's the original unit.
Here's the question- I know to go to Autozone and get the Mitsu gear reduction unit. I mentioned this to the parts jockey and got the deer-in-the-headlights look over the phone. Bottom line is they list two, one for like $140 (ValuCraft) and one for $217 (DuraCraft). The spendy one is the one I want??? It would stand to reason- I never get to take the cheap route. Sigh...
Thanks,
Keith

Hummm... can't remember but I want to say it's the cheapie... Just drive over there and have him pull the cheap on and take a look... Fingers crossed for ya.
remember every dog does get a piece of the warm sidewalk once in a while... Maybe today is your day...

Rooster,
Yeah, it actually cranks slower when warm- batteries load test OK (~980CCA each), cables are good. I'm thinkin' it's cheap insurance, and it's easier to work in the garage than on the shoulder of some Godforsaken stretch of highway that I'm known to frequent.

Here ya go. Copy and Paste to notepad then print it and take it with you to Autozone. Baja
order this starter from Autozone...Duralast-offset gear reduction Mitsubishi, Autozone part # 16561 , price $129.99 US dollars, core charge = $120.00 USD( so take old one with you), Limited Lifetime Waranty. Even if your old starter is a different brand (mine was an AC Delco ) get the Mitsubushi- Autozone doesn't care. From what these guys told me about replacing this starter ...I expected it to be very difficult, it wasn't, 15 minutes out, one hour to Autozone and back, 15 minutes back in. It takes longer just to get the tools rounded up .
that price is very common price range and i did go thru alot of starter on 7.3 IDI engines my was listed 130.00 us dollars with exchange and to swap out the starter it will take less than 20 min after you get all nessecary tool round up.
Merci, Marc
P.S. yeah it will turn over little more slower when it is warm but cool it will spin over pretty fast but not much differnce as long you keep over 225 cranking rpm you will light off ok
