i am going to work on my truck this weekend but wanted to get some input from you guys before i start and possibly save myself some work. the problem i am having is when i turn the key and the "wait to start" light goes out i get a short tick and the volt meter barely moves. needless to say my truck will not start. if i cycle the glo plugs 5 or 6 times, then it will fire up.
i want to know what would be causing this. anyone ever have anything that sounds like this happen to them? a few bad glo plugs? bad gp controller? any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks
it stays on about 6-10 seconds.
i just tested all the plugs. passenger side closest to the firewall was dead. changed it out and cranked it up. it was acting like it did before but im not sure if its because the truck has been sitting for a few days. ill try it again in about an hour and see what it does. hopefully that will be it.
i did some other tests too. the wire continuity and the harness. both seemed to check out.
is there an adjustment period when you replace a glow plug?
as you can see, i could not wait for the weekend
What kind of truck are you talking about? what year?

sounds interesting. There should be a significant pull on the voltmeter for the controller. Sounds like it could be a controller issue or just a connections issue. I'd check the controller now that you have verified the glow plugs.

i went to start it before work this morning and the plugs seemed to cycle fine. it did not start on first crank and it seemed that the batteries were low or a bad connection somewhere because it cranked really slow. yesterday when i checked both batteries they were at 12.5 volts. now im a bit confused. I replaced my battery cables a couple of months back, they were splitting open and looked even worse once they were removed. Yours are 13+ years old now, how many miles on your truck? This might not be your specific problem, but it could be contributing.

well, everything checks out as far as the glow plugs and relay. i think, in the process, i may have killed the starter. is this possible? it cranks only very slow but not fast enough i guess. took a while but i had it running and it was charging around 14.05 volts. the battery cables look pretty good(from what i can tell). should i bother with the starter or just do the cables to make sure? or do both? also, will the truck run good if the injection pump is bad? could it be the starter solenoid and not the starter? please help as i am going crazy. thanks again!!
problem solved....it was the starter. i took it up to autozone and they tested it for me. damn thing did not pass a single test on their machine!! dont know how it was turning over the motor but who cares now.
