Starting issue

Since I bought my truck 2 months ago it has been hard to start, Most of the time it will start up right away and die after 1-2 seconds shooting out white smoke after it has sat awhile (1 day or longer) then I have to cycle the glow plugs about 10-15 times and it will finally fire and stay started and run really well. After its been driven awhile it will start up fine as long as I dont let it sit longer than an hour. Changing the starter and fuel filter has helped some. Two shops have told me 2 different solutions: 1st shop said I need a new IP, new injectors and injector lines (I hope not) and the second shop told me I need a new GP controller and relay. Any advice that can help me pinpoint the solution would be helpful since I dont want to start throwing parts at it.

Thanks

Re: Starting issue

Problem is an air leak in the fuel system, probably your injector O-rings, caps, and fuel lines between. they can be purchased in a kit called injector replacment kit for around $30-35.

Re: Starting issue

just a thought but maybe your fuel pump. i had the same problem the truck would start then die and then you would have to crank it for ever before it would start. the pump is cheap and easy to put on

Re: Starting issue

What you need to do is search for posts re air in the fuel system. Look for info on http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/home.html re the air leak points a on the fuel filter...... I think he also has the instructions for the clear hose in the return 2 lines.

Your exhibiting the classic symptoms of fuel drainoff...... air enters the system via a bad seal or sensor or return line oring and allows the IP to retain just enough for a start. Then you have to re prime the upper part of the system.... filter/IP etc.

Possibly linked with a GP problem......how long does the WTS light stay on......

Re: Starting issue

There are times where I can get it to stay running on the first try(about 1 time every 20 starts) and I am leaning toward the GP controller and relay since it wont start at all unless I keep cycling the glow plugs about 10 times. All the glow plugs are good (motorcraft) but I was told (havent confirmed) by a shop that my GP controller was "melted"

Re: Starting issue

Do you get a cycle from the GP controller? How long? Can you hear it clicking after the light goes off? Or see the gage move? that could indicate that the system is working.

BUT, I agree with these guys here. Classic air leak description.

Re: Starting issue

When cold the WTS light stays on for anywhere between 3-10 seconds, it varies alot and I can hear it cycling after the light goes out. If it is a air leak its probably coming from the fuel filter assy, since its leaking from the fuel filter cap and the water seperator at the bottom.

Re: Starting issue

Sounds to me like the GP controller is working as designed.
When did you last replace the return lines etc? Done any work around the GP or injecotrs that may have knocked them loose? 35 bucks ant a couple of hours to install a kit would be good maintenance even if it does not fix the issue.

Re: Starting issue

Check the ground wire from the GP Controller to the drivers side valve cover bolt. It must be clean and tight. Lotsa Controller problems have been traced back to this. OkieGringo

Re: Starting issue

What color are the.......grey painted

That ground wire if you can stretch it to the intake manifold bolt that would be better. The 93 engines had a special stud/bolt, you've seen them looks like a stud with a nut in the middle and a washer and nut holds the wire.
