starting problem

I've replaced just about everything in my van, which is an ex-ambulance 7.3L E350 with 170k, and it now runs very well and just got 16+mpg towing a boat cross-country. But sometimes when the engine is hot and I shut it off it will not start unless I let it sit for about 45 minutes. this doesn't happen all the time, just when it's most inconvenient. I've had it checked by 3 mechanics and they find no problems. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

I'm getting ready to put it up for sale and want to solve this problem before passing it along.

Note: not sure of the gearing but I do notice that the speedometer reads fast - says 65 when going 55! The door sticker info is: 9000lbs, 138 WB, C2 (4.10 L/S) axle with 4x4Q springs, AK body, and E trans (E4OD).

Re: starting problem

Probably a worn injection pump. When hot, the tolerances get loose and you don't get enough pressure. The way to test is to cool the pump and then try to restart. Someone else should be able to tell you a safe way to do that. I don't want to tell you to dump cold water on it unless that is the correct method. Hang loose and someone should come on and let you know.

Re: starting problem

Jerry is correct. You do not want to pour cold water over the injection pump. Fill a two litre bottle with room temp. water. After you shutdown and it won't start, pour the room temp. water over the injection pump body. wait a few seconds and try to start. Give it a shot and let us know your results. Tim
