Starting Problems

I got the truck 2 weeks ago, and it starts pretty hard when its cold.

it will start pretty quick, but then it always shuts off after a couple of seconds.
then i have to crank about 5 seconds and press the throttle to get it started again, and it smokes quite a bit at first.
after that, it seems to run fine

any ideas?

also, the tach doesn't work. anybody know how the tach operates on a diesel?

thanks

Re: Starting Problems

You may have some air infiltration, more than likely from the return lines. It's a cheap fix. You can get a kit from DIS at www.dieselpage.com for $25. It comes with the o-rings, plastic caps, cut to fit hose with new clamps and eight copper injector gaskets.
The tach sender is the big nut looking thing with two wires in the center. It is located on the injection pump gear housing, to the drivers side of the oil fill. What does the tach do? Does it bounce around, or nothing?

Re: Starting Problems

Sounds like an air intrusion into the fuel system allowing drainoff of fuel. Any wet spots on the filter header or return lines.
