steering gear box

I finally have my truck complete(almost) . I swaped a tank and it leaks now.....gotta use up the gas i put in before i see what i did wrong .

But other than that all done . Only thing is my steering seems really sloppy . I believe its coming from the gear box , wich would have been a smart move to do while everything was out but o well .

Is thier any way to adjust these ? I see on top theres a nut and stud , while losening the nut i can also turn the stud . I tried ripping it off the donor truck , but its in ruff shape anyway , if im gonna do it ill buy it new . Wich i also couldnt get it off the steering arm , what am i doing wrong?

Are these adjustable?
How much does one cost new about?

Re: steering gear box

The way I understand it:
1) wheels straight
2) loosen the jam nut and turn the "stud" in until its snug but not tight.
3) hold the stud in place and tighten the jab nut.
4) turn the wheel all the way left and right. Make sure it doesn't bind. (if it does loosen the adjustment up a littel)

All that said I tried that a few weeks ago on mine and it didn't help me much, it looks like my steering box is just warn out. So Checker had one for ~150 bucks. I'm having it installed today (too busy to do it myself) I'll let you know if it solves anything.

Re: steering gear box

It has been my experience that when these boxes need adjustment it time to replace
I just get one from a bone yard for a Ranger or Mazda pickup they have the same box
and no 1k diesel sitting top the one in my truck is off a 97 Explorer

Since nobody else has said it, may I be the first to suggest that the first thing you did wrong was putting gas in it?
