If i buy an automatic, i will drive it until the transmission dies, then replace the trans and keep driving, but, i would probably like to replace that auto with a manual. How plausible is such a task in an F250 7.3L?
It has been done many times BUT you will need a donor truck/engine for the required clutch pedal and clutch parts

93 F250 7.3 IDI S/C XLT 4X4 E40D 3.55LS, Captains chairs, Tutone Mocha, Leer 48" Hiboy cap, FR & RR hitches, full DeeZee running boards. Factory ordered/delivered Jan 93 has 160K+, it's basically a stock truck with all the Ford options, just no disc player.
Toys: 26'Jayco FK TT, 18'Sylvan Pro Fish.
So i need:
clutch pedal
clutch linkage
clutch
transmission
are the mounts different?
do i have to move the accelerator or brake pedals? other floor items?
is the linkage between the motor and the clutch the same as the linkage between the motor and the auto trans? that is, can i just take the auto off and put on the clutch and manual?
is the linkage ebtween the tranny and the driveline the same?
is there a book or other resource that can describe the whole process?
Flywheel to transmission, everything. MAYBE Driveshaft and transfer case(if 4x4)? Dont know if the pedals need to be moved any but you have to add one. The injector pump has to be changed a little too. The TPS has to be switched to a manual version. (correct me if im wrong,Pete) You would probably need to change the whole column too.
Not saying its impossible....just VERY time consuming.
You won't need a TPS at all for a manual transmission. I don't know that you'd have to change the steering column, except that it might look a bit strange to have a shifter on the floor and a spare one on the column....

Banks non-wastegated turbo system, Beru ZD1A glowplugs, Delphi BB injectors, Kenworth pyrometer, vac/boost gauge, electric water temp/oil psi/voltmeter mounted in dash. 3" Mandrel-bent open exhaust. C6 trans, 3.54 gears. Okiegringo idler pulley. R134a A/C conversion. WMO/diesel blend in one tank.
It's NOT that time consuming- I did the swap in basically 3 full days.
You'll need:
*5-speed transmission out of a diesel. If your truck is a 4x4, get a 4x4 5-speed. If 4x2, get a 4x2 transmission. NOT interchangeable
*transfer case (if equipped)
*driveshaft(s) out of 5-speed truck (auto trans is much longer, hence the different lengths)
*transmission tunnel out of donor truck (unless you want to cut holes in your automatic tunnel)
*master/slave cylinder assembly (DO NOT DISCONNECT the hoses) for the hydraulic clutch system
*Clutch/Flywheel- might as well buy brand new while it's apart. Get a "Luk singlemass conversion kit" or similar
*Transmission crossmember out of donor truck
*Clutch/brake pedal assembly (My donor truck was an '87 and would not fit into my '94- different dash style, so be careful)
Can't think of anything else offhand, been awhile. I'm sure more people will chime in and help ya. Hope this helps.
