System Charging at 15 volts + - can i adjust it?

Per the dummy gauges, the truck has been charging at the "L" of normal and the other day it was above that. So I put my voltage meter on it while sitting in the driveway, nothing on, and it is charging at 15 volts +/- (hard to tell with my meter). This can't be good for the system. Any way to adjust the regulator? If not, what could be the cause?

thanks all

Actually depending on system conditions you may be ok. Example a weak or a dead cell or two in a battery will make for a higher charge rate. As well as temp, engine rpm etc. I would check the bat's.

My truck also reads that high.Been that way for 5 years.Diesel tech at the dealer said it was normal...I have had zero problems with the batterys or charging system.......well except when the tensioner broke and wrapped the serp belt around the fan 5 times and left me stranded..oops wrong story

How accurate is your meter is the question I would be asking... Over time all meter will get out of calibration and your not that much higher than I have seen on The Enterprise or other trucks.

Re: System Charging at 15 volts + - can i adjust it?

14-15 volts is ok. It takes a higher voltage than the nominal 12 volts to get the batteries to charge.

Yup, Jim's right. The old gasser's voltmeter runs at 14-15 volts all day long. If it drops down to 12 or less, then I know I'm not charging and there is a problem. The factory "gauge" (and I use that term loosely) gives no useful info. Scrap it and install a voltmeter. That's what I'm doing on my project truck.
