This last week the tach doesn't always work .. I tested the sensor and it tests good .. I tested the fuse and it's good (but the other gauges on that fuse work) ..
I wouldn't be worried except when the tach isn't working the transmission (E4OD) goes (and stays) in high,to take off you have to pull it into low and shift manual ..

Check all the connections, there are a few including the main engine harness connector on the drvrs fender. Are the wires at the top of the sensor bare if so they will short out.

I agree, replace the sensor. There's no sense ruining your transmission over a $50 part. Once you have a known good sensor, that will positively confirm or deny the original being bad.

the tack has a connector on the back that plugs into the circuit board, sometimes over time the contacts get corroded and must be cleaned ....robert

I have a new tach sensor with taxes it was $99.80CDN but I didn't put it in yet ... The sensor in it is less than a year old ,and tests 2530 ohms (good is 2000-3000 ohms) .. I checked the firewall wires cleaned some with contact cleaner and put dielectric grease on them .. Also cleaned the wires on the back of the dash assy ,Ford made a cheap circuit board when they made that it's just flexable plastic.. Anyway it's working now but it worked sometimes anyway so I guess I'll have to watch it and see if it stops working again ..
I have some Ford paper manuals & CD manuals they tell how to test tach but they don't go far enough in breaking the tests down..

Well if your transmission is acting funny then it's not just your dash tach that is reading weird. The tach in the instrument cluster gets its signal from the E4OD computer. If the transmission is Blinking the OD light when it's not working then it's losing it's connection before the computer, not after.

My bet is on the tach sender - been down that road before. Now as for the flexible circuit board being cheap... you got that backwards... I worked in a factory that made PCB's and the flex boards are actually more durable over the long term in a much boarder range of climates and environments plus a flex board cost TONS more to manufacture... So you should be impressed that Ford actually spent the extra money and used logic to choose the flex - this is not the norm for ANY of the big 3

The OD light isn't blinking .. I tried to find a schematic of the tach system ,but no luck finding it yet ..

If you go to http://community.webshots.com/user/tim94f250 there will be a diesel tach schematic and the PCM connector. If that doesn't help, let us know exactly what you need. Tim
