Thanks for the help!
Last Friday night, I discovered that my dash lights quit, and later on that I also had no running lights. I suspected a gimpy headlight switch, and tried changing that out. When I discovered a melted switch socket, I began researching the archives. The "how to" and "how come" made the repair relatively straightforward!
To make a long story short, last night I successfully added a relay to the running light circuit while replacing the ruined socket. I got my parts at NAPA, and spent more than some on the list, but a whole lot less than my friendly neighborhood repair shop would have charged me while billing labor at $75 an hour.
I have the Summit Racing harness for the headlights on order, and hope to make that upgrade this weekend while further insulating the new switch from heavy current draw.
Thanks again to everyone that posted about this problem--too much trailer towing, I guess--that poor brown/white wire was toast!!
