is there any way to tell if a injection pump is good or not off motor?
Hey guys I got a 1993 7.3 IDI off my buddy and well the glowplugs were swelled in the heads and took heads off got the problem straitened out finally. I am in the process of putting the engine back togehter. But my buddy (who i bought the motor off of) gave me a spare injection pump but its missing the rod on the one side that goes from the bottom of the pump and pivvots in middle of the pump up to the top and rides along one fo the parts that the throttle is hooked up to. I cant remember what they call it. My buddy claims its a good injection pump but he is a story teller at times so i really have no idea if tis good or not. Any sugestions on how to see if its good? Anything i can do here at my house to test it or anything?
thanks,
jimmy

1990 f-350 4x4 when bought had tons of problems and also had no tranny ot transfercase
4 speed tranny, transfercase installed, new injectors, advanced timing like it should be, new voltage regualtor, has meyers plow, new clutch master cylinder, I have wiring problems with it right now on the interior guages
also I heard the timign on a 6.9 pump is different the a 7.3 pump is this correct? If so then i cannot use the 6.9 pump on the 7.3 is that rigth or can you interchange them?

You can interchange them and it will work. I have seen it done. But in that situation the pump is supposed to be properly tuned for the 7.3's fuel delivery. I have also seen a 7.3 pump put on a 6.9.
I'm not sure how to tell if the pump is good or not off the engine. I would do your best to thoroughly inspect it, especially the shaft area. Make sure there isn't dirt or crud in it as best you can.

Off engine the only way as far as visually would be to remove the governor cover (TOP) and inspect for crud/rust etc.

Build a test setup with an electric motor and machine a pulley to bolt onto the injector pump to drive it...but at that rate you would be miles ahead to install it and give it a whirl. Or take it to a local diesel shop...that's essentially what one of ours has on display to show how the major brand injectors have very dissimilar spray patterns.
