timing... what does it boil down to?

ok, I haven't timed my trcuk before and i want it done professionally. I have turned the internal screw on the IP 1/2 a turn and maxxed out the external screw. it will blow a small plume of white/gray smoke (when cold) when its just been cranked. it will blow black when warm. it will roll out the black smoke when stomping on the go-pedal and when under a load. since turning it up i have noticed an increase in power. what all is involved in timing it? how costly would it be?...............Gibson

DT

It's not too involved to have the engine timed. Simply hook up a meter, and get the revs up and see what comes up on the meter. My last one cost me $50 at the local diesel shop.

I might add though that I don't see anything in your sig about having a pyro, and I might caution you about turning up your pump without having one. My engine had a turbo in a previous life, and they yanked it before I got it, but never turned the pump down. I was always impressed by the power and the black smoke it laid down, that is until I melted a piston by running it too hot.

So, before you get to heavy with that foot, better get a pyro into that beast and see what the temps are really doing, before you melt something. You'll be amazed how quickly the temp jumps up over 1000deg!!

Make it from Texas to the IDI Weekend in July, and I'll do it for free.

Yeah right, Mel, you'd better be ready to install 8 new pistons before you 'do the timing'. Baja
