Hello guys. Know it's been a while but I had to sideline my truck project while Life happens! Sure we've all been there. Now I'm back into working on it again I've got one problem that I've always had. This thing is just TOO LOUD! I know older diesels are noisy and I accept that, but this thing you can barely hear yourself think when it's running. I was standing beside an older 6.9 truck earlier today and it sounds more like I think mine should. In searching old threads I see timing is partly responsible for diesel combustion noise. Can it really make that much difference? I bet this thing would hit almost 90db with the hood raised! What to do? Only other problem with it running is the excessive smoking which doesn't really bother me with the windows up and AC on.

You can run a percentage of Biodiesel with the ULSD. I ran a roughly 30% bioD mix that really quieted mine down alot.
I do understand that BioD is not readily available everywhere so it may not be an option. Also, MPG decrease with this option. I only buy it when I go close to a place that sells it.....

TO DO: Boost guage, Tekonsha Voyager Brake controller and Turbo when I acquire one!!!
Retarding the timing will quiet it down, but you will lose power.

I struggled with this issue for a couple years then found some sound insulator mat from Summit Racing I'd bought for a project long ago. I lined the floor pan and under the seat and could not believe how much nicer it is to drive. Mine is a custom cab that came with almost nothing so it may not be as dramatic if you have an XLT.
The other thing that quieted it down was using aluminum clothes dryer exhaust to replace the missing plastic pieces from the breather "snorkel". OEM is better, the aluminum keeps cracking from work hardening.
I've already ran the dryer duct hose and it seems to help the truck run a little better as well. Hadn't thought about the deadening material yet. Went to Wendy's drive thru last night and had to cut the truck off because the lady taking my order couldn't hear me. That sucks!

Sorry but I'm thinking the same thing, or get a new, quite diesel. I love the sound of my IDI. I can say this is the first time I seen someone complain about the sound of their IDI. Now the PSD guys......especially the 6.0 and 6.4 guys......they can't stand the sound of a diesel.
Shame for even saying it's too loud....

When I say too loud I mean from an IDI standpoint. I've heard other IDI trucks and they don't sould like mine. I love the diesel chatter you don't understand just how loud this thing is. Everyone who hears my truck is like "Is it supposed to be that loud"?

My 93 was loud also and after changeing motors (92 motor with 85K miles on it) I couldn't belive the difference. I read some where they changed the head design in 93.
Is the noise constant, or does it fade depending on acceleration or deceleration?
Does the engine torque excessively when accelerated?
The reason I ask is because when I installed my Banks I had a clearance issue between the downpipe and the firewall. I could not hear myself think until I modified the firewall enough to maintain clearance.
A real loud idle/clatter is likely a result of you timing being off. Advanced too much and it will make all kind of racket. Get some one to time it professionally at 8.5 degrees BTDC (pulse method). It will run and sound better.

When Timing, which direction is advancing and which is retarding. I am sitting on the drivers side looking at my IP. The pump notch is below the block notch by about an inch. THis means that from the front of the engine, the IP is rotated clockwise. Does this sound ballpark. I purchased the truck a month ago like this and believe that it may be retarded. There is very little valve clatter, and when the engine crancks up, the exhaust is sol loud its ridiculous, like a monster truck. I'm thinking I may have fuel still exploding down my exhaust due to late injection!..... Sound correct???
