Tops RPM 7.3 IDI
What is the top RPM limit for these 90 7.3 IDIs My 67 GMC bus with a Detroit had a top limit of 2200 RPM at 70 MPH w/V730 auto. GM suggested they run at 1800. That was fast enough for me, w/26000 lb bus.

Re: Tops RPM 7.3 IDI
IIRC, the engine is governed out at 3700rpm. Mine, when loaded to the gills, likes 3000-3200rpm. EGTs and water/coolant temps stay managable. Coolant temps start rising FAST if I let it drop to less than 2600rpm. Okiegringo

Re: Tops RPM 7.3 IDI
The tag on the injection pumps I've seen (3 or 4 of them) all say they're governed at 3300 rpm.

Re: Tops RPM 7.3 IDI
i was kinda wondering about those revs too, i know i tuned my '05 duramax to spin 4600 fueld, and it hauled butt.but they are balenced to spin way up there un-fueld (grade braking)

Re: Tops RPM 7.3 IDI
The engine is governed, so you can't overspeed it if the governor is working properly. Low geared trucks will run right on the governed RPM at highway speeds (My international does at 66 mph).

Re: Tops RPM 7.3 IDI
I was afraid of that too. I always keep mine under 2800 or so and didn't run over 70 MPH at 2200 for fear of over-revving. I guess I can open er up and let it go eh?

Re: Tops RPM 7.3 IDI
if they are manual u can overrev by downshifting early.
