total overhaul

Hi everybody,

I ended up getting my IP installed and timed (thanks cdnsarguy for all the advice) but seemed to uncover many more problems.

1. My IP got gummed up a bit and wouldn't provide fuel to the engine. I thought it was a lift pump and since it I was in a parking ramp, I thought it best to have it towed to the nearest repair shop that I trust.

Turned out that the IP governor or fuel regulator was rusty and stuck shut. (on a new reman none the less)

They got it started but found what sounded like a dead miss. I believe it because a mechanic friend pointed it out himself awhile back.

It could be either valves or rings or both I guess at this point so I must ask the question.

If I have to have either my rings or my valves replaced or possibly both would I just be better off getting a new engine? I imagine that this would be very expensive of a repair for a shop to make. I can't think that they would just replace the rings on just one cylinder, or just one valve you probably replace those in a set right?

How much would a complete overhaul cost if I did it myself? what would I have to send out for (block cleaning and boring) and what could be done by myself? Any special tools needed to get the job done right? Has anybody heard of renting an engine stand? How much time for an experiences mechanic to do this (id probably take three times that much)

I guess im pissed at myself because this is just becoming a real money pit. I've already put 1600 into this thing and now this.

Do any of these kits look good?

Thanks for all your help.

Before you get too mad at the possibility of the expense of a rebuilt engine, we need to determine what the exact problem is. If it is indeed just a valve then that is a simple repair. If it is a ring then you may well get by with just a "rering" kit. Has anyone done a leakdown test? That will get you started in the direction you need to go.

As far as how much a rebuilt engine or doing the work yourself will cost depends on what is wrong and how much you want to do. I have seen engines with no more than reworked heads, new rings, bearings and polished crank go many years and miles. Taking precise measurments of the cylinders will determine if a bore is needed.

What possibly made you come to that conclusion? The last thing an engine miss would be caused by would be piston rings. And diesels (all types) are pretty easy on valves. Of course a burnt valve is not unheard of and a compression check would tell the tale. The more likely easy to fix possibilities are endless, bad injector, broken valve lifter roller, bent pushrod, injection pump, etc.

"The more likely easy to fix possibilities are endless, bad injector, broken valve lifter roller, bent pushrod, injection pump,"

That is what im afraid of. This truck has been one fix after another.
Already took care of the IP and injectors

just got an update from the tech, 3 cylinders are getting bad compression all on the passenger side none the less.

Im not burning coolant so a blown head gasket is probably not the case, but this just sounds worse and worse. I can't afford to have these kinds of problems right now.

Understood. That's not a good sign.
