Re: towing

Need a bit more information - turbo or not? Weight of trailer (30' can vary a LOT depending on age, options and such).

Re: towing

It will pull it but it will be slow. Any long hills or headwinds will be torture. Be carefull with locking in the overdrive on that transmission when you are pulling or you will burn it up. If you don't have a turbo on the motor it would probably help a lot.

With those 3.55 gears and no turbo, you WILL NOT enjoy the trip. There are lotsa looooong, steeeeep grades "out there". Also, even with a turbo installed, get a big friggin' tranny cooler, make sure the radiator is perfect and that the fan clutch is working perfect. Get a tranny temp gauge installed and DO NOT let the tranny temp get over 220 deg. or it will FRY. If you decide to get a turbo, be sure to get a wastegated one, either ATS or Banks will turn your trip in a real pleasure. When was the IP(injection pump) last rebuilt? The IP needs to be rebuilt ~ every 100,000 miles. A worn out IP is a ***** to replace out in the middle of nowhere. You'd better get to work on that engine. Got lotsa money to throw at it? Sorry, I don't mean to be "a party pooper" but you asked. OkieGringo

having a 90 f250 e40d 4x4 with 4:10's 7.3 IDI non turbo and living out here in the west.
I can pull Donner summit Sacto to Reno top speed 55-60 mph without my trailer. Add the 19 ft Airstream (5000lbs) trailer and if I scoot down in the seat and play like I'm a formula one driver. With the trailer, all aerodynamic...top speed is a whopping 30, maybe 35 if the 2 dogs hunker down in their seats.
It majorly sucks.

I think the butterflies travel faster.
Listen to these guys, walkin aint much fun when you haven't planned it occurring.

Good info above. If your doing this in winter temps, thats a big advantage. 89 to 94 E4od's weren't the strongest versions made so attention to temps is important. Recommend biggest aftermarket tranny cooler @ minimum and a temp gauge if possible. Tip: if tranny gets to hot pour water on tranny cooler, will bring it down fast. Don't forget good brakes. Advantage turbo or PSD with tow package (4:10 axle) for moving this RV on a regular basis.
