Towing capacity

Hello,
I want to thank everyone for all the priceless info I get here.
I have a 94 f350 turbo diesel with 4 sp auto trans with 175,000 miles.
I need to make a 500 mile trip and bring back as many round bales of hay as I can safley pull without hurting this truck,I am not willing to drive with my foot on the floor or at high rpms. What can I saftlt pull? My customer want me to pull 14 @ around 1000 lbs ea plus tralier weight? What do you say? Thanks

Re: Towing capacity

I believe your biggest issue will be your ability to stop, since these trucks are not the best known for their radical stopping distance. My guess is you will probably be ok pulling about 12K max, 14K is most likely pushing it a little too far.

Going on 167 K miles. Thinking about whacking the muffler off of it. Custom 1000 watt sound system, and brand new headlight assemblys. On board air system with amtrack airhorns.

1979 Jeep CJ-7, 2.5 inch lift, 33" procomp Xterrains, 6 banger with the T-18 trans. New seats, and such. Its a project in the works.

Re: Towing capacity

If your E4OD has a good tranny cooler and is not on it's last leg, you should be ok if trailer has brakes. OldMisterBill used to pull more than that with his '91 with non-wastegated turbo and E4OD all over hell and back. OkieG

Re: Towing capacity

Well I dont want to seem like an jerk, but if you are going to pull stuff then dont be afraid to stick your foot in it. The way that diesels are made and the pumps are set up, unless you jam a gear going down hill or something, the red line is a safe engine RPM. Just watch your EGTs. Plus lugging the engine is worse for it then running in the peak power curve. As far as the tranny goes, get a good cooler if you dont have one and run like hell. Trailer brakes, a must, them damn rear drums dont work worth garbage, been there, done that, almost had a huge lawsuit on my hands, especially since california says your max trailer wieght can only be 10K without having a CDL, but the trailer was a bit over 18K and it pulled it like the champ it is.
