TRANSFER CASE FLUID

I,m sure someone can help me with this. On my 1989,f350,crewcab,4x4 I just replaced the transfer case with a remanufactured one. All has gone well until I noticed two fluid fill holes on it. One on the rear and one on the front. The one on the front says "pto fill only" and is approximately 3 inches higher than the one on the rear which is labeled "fill only". The one on the rear is only about 2 inches above the drain plug. When I filled it I filled the rear hole. It only took about 1 1/2 quarts. I asked the guy where I bought it about it and he really did,t make me feel like he knew any more than me. He said that you only needed to fill the"pto" plug if you had power take off as in an extra set of gearing to take power off. HUH?!/?. My thinking was that the pto was the yoke to the front for four wheel drive. Thats why I'm asking you guys. Thanks. Re: TRANSFER CASE FLUID

You could get a transfer case to run a seperate pto application. In an agricultural application it could be used to run anything with a pto shaft that required limited horse power. I'm sure their were other applications. You filled to the right level but I would drive it a very little bit and recheck it.

Re: TRANSFER CASE FLUID

A PTO (Power Take Off) is a gearbox that bolts to the side of the transmission and usually meshes with the reverse idler gear. I would assume that your transfer case also has a PTO opening, and the oil level would need to be higher in order to get lube up to the PTO hole and into the PTO gearbox.

For a PTO lesson, my tow truck has a PTO mounted on the side of the trans which runs a hydraulic pump to run the various wrecker cylinders. Hydraulics are the usual purpose of PTO's, although they can be used for water pumps etc. You can basically use them to drive anything that needs to turn and can be mounted under the truck.
