Re: Transfer case leak-Need Help

Is there a trick to weiwing your images? I get a frog and a browse thing.

It's a simple fix. Pry the old seal out, line up new seal with the notch up and drain hole down. With the proper size socket or seal installer, drive seal in. Tim
Oh, remove driveshaft first!!!

Re: Transfer case leak-Need Help

i have been told that the yoke isn't seated correctly and that the driveshaft may be too long- By looking at the pictures can you guys tell anything? Also, what is this seal called?

Re: Transfer case leak-Need Help

If those pictures are of the driveshaft in it's assembled position, then indeed, the driveshaft is about 1"-2" too long. When the rear suspension goes upward, the driveshaft moves toward the transfer case. I'm surprised the extension housing is still in one piece. The seal is called a yoke to flange seal, base part # 7B215

Re: Transfer case leak-Need Help

You need to take it to a driveshaft place and have them shorten it. First, park the truck on level ground. Bounce on the bumper a few times to make sure the suspension is relaxed. Unbolt the rear u-joints and remove the shaft. Look at the smooth surface to see if there is a mark from an old seal. as long as it is not scored, don't worry. Have them shorten your shaft by about 2 inches. Ask them to balance it too. It's been a long time since I've had driveshaft work done, but I'd guess they will charge you $50 -$75 If you can afford it, have them replace the u-joints. You may have to in order to balance the shaft. Now you're approaching the $100 mark. Tim

You're best off by driving to the driveshaft place and have them take a look at it. That is the best way to do it.

Re: Transfer case leak-Need Help

thanks tim- I appreciate your help- I guess the shaft has caused the problem with the leak. i wonder why the shaft is too long? The truck has been lifted but I think that would make it too short. Unless the previous owner changed driveshafts and used one that is too long??? kinda wierd... Thanks again for the help

Re: Transfer case leak-Need Help

The truck being lifted would make a difference if it is a suspension lift, not a body lift. That is a one-piece driveshaft, no? There is not a hanger bearing is there? Probably not, but I have to ask!!
No problem with the help. Anytime, Tim
