when i bought this truck it would grind into reverse occasionaly and you would just have try again and it would always go in second time. Over the short time that ive had this truck its gotten worse, i was having to put it in 1st then reverse and would go in, now its at the point where it just wont go in. i have to literaly turn my truck off then put it in reverse and fire it back up. If i sound fired up its because it happened about 20 minutes ago so i got all pissed and filled my neighborhood with the nice diesel black smoke did 80 down a near by street and came back and parked it. anyway... what the hell is wrong with my tranny, Syncros? Not a tranny mechanic. Help please!

It isn't the tranny. It is your clutch. The clutch pedal gets lower and lower as time goes by (from wear on the clutch) until you can't push the clutch in far enough to release the clutch. You can crawl under the truck and look in the inspection cover on the bottom of the clutch cover and see if you have fried the throwout bearing. If not, it is time to investigate a new clutch. There are many here who don't use the stock DMF setup for cost reasons. A single mass flywheel works better, I am told.

is there loose up fore and aft play in your clutch pedal? There is a bushin inside the clutch master cyl pushrod where it connects the pedal. It wears out then becomes metal to metal. the clearances increase and effectively you are pushing the pushrod in worse and worse. Being a 92, with x# of miles it's a possibility, some have utilized a small heim joint to replace the eylet/pin/bushing combo.

there's no syncros in reverse.
they are straight cut gears. If your clutch is going out, then your gears are still spinning when you are trying to get in. check your oil level in your tranny too. sometimes low oil level will make it tough to get into gear.

I am not too sure about NO syncros in reverse. I could be rolling and hit reverse just like first gear. No grinding at all. No way to double clutch it for reverse while rolling forward.

Mine does the same thing and I don't know why yet. My clutch is fine, hardly even broken in. I suspect damaged reverse idler gear or damaged reverse gear or bent shift fork or nylon pad worn off the shift fork. Next time I pull the tranny I am going to split her open and have a look. I forgot to mention, mine seems to go into reverse just fine without grinding. But, when I let the clutch out it grinds and pops out of gear. ---ENUS

You're describing exactly what mine did before the heim joint mod, which completely fixed everything for under $6
