Transmisson slipping in overdrive E4OD

My 1994 F250 E4OD transmission has just started slipping on hard acceleration in overdrive . I am planning on doing a pan and filter drop plus a flush as I don't know when the previous owner did it . Realistically don't have much faith in the ATF solving the problem . I would like some help with the diagnosis . - Thanks

It doesn't sound good, also try pulling codes checking tranny connections and check fipl. Does your speedo and tach work properly?

Re: Transmisson slipping in overdrive E4OD

Yes, I don't know if you saw my post from yesterday but mine was slipping in overdrive as well. Of course it was MAJOR slippage as it would hardly move the truck. Downshifting to first worked fine. Tach was dead and so was the ability to turn off the OD on the shifter. I guess the point here is that there is a lot of *gizzmagictry* that makes these silly E4OD trannys work so before assuming the worst (most expensive) try the simple stuff. I checked all the fuses (removed them and reinstalled them) and checked the connection at the tach sensor. Now it works again. Corroded contacts on a fuse? Flakey wires on the tach sensor? I have no clue but plan to replace the tach sensor ASAP.

Re: Transmisson slipping in overdrive E4OD

I just want to add to my prior post - there does not appear to be any slipping with the overdrive switch turned off . Also can someone please explain how the overdrive works in this transmission ? I have located a used transmission locally from a private party for $ 300 without the torque conventer .

The ONLY adjustment that you can play with is the FIPL. If you have it set at the right voltage. It sounds like the valve body isn't getting the right amt of current which controls the shifting inside the trans. Voltage from the FIPL and the RPM sent by Tach Sensor, is sent thru the ECM Relay to the computer. Computer also receives info from the vehicle speed sensor(VSS).
The "Overdrive" is just another gear. You can turn it off when towing/hauling something heavy up a hill/mtn, but it's just another gear. The slipping is probalbly the torque converter unlocking/locking due to lack of sufficient FIPL voltage to computer. If the trans fluid temps are lower than 100 degrees it won't lockup, because low temps wear the clutch material faster and/or it'll "chunk off". This is a pre-set valve that CANNOT be changed. Also it's a reason that the trans cooler line goes thru the bottom of the radiator...to help warm up the fluid on cold mornings. Also cools it when fluid temps are too high. Go to THIS POST To read what I told another member about how trans works.

Also, rather have you spend $300 on a unknown transmission, I'd highly recommend that you spend a little more money and get one of these "Baumann TCS Programmable Computers". I am SOOOOOOO happy with the one I bought. My trans was worse than yours and not only is the trans shifting like new, but the engine doesn't have to rev it's heart out to shift. This Baumann TCS is friggin' AWESOME. I just put in a new set of variables today, and I was crusin' around at 35 MPH in 4TH gear, TC locked, turnin' 1200 RPM with 4.10 gears. TC will stay locked down into 2nd gear. Totally AWESOME!!! Re: Transmisson slipping in overdrive E4OD

Tach and speedo work properly . My OD light has never worked (OD works) . Taking a quick look under the vehicle I noticed splices in the cooler line and the cover plate missing under the TC ring gear - meaning that this the transmission been rebuilt or replaced by a previous owner . It sounds like I better change fluid, check codes and , and the FIPL before I make any rash decisions . I am also will try finding one of those ATSG manuals .
