I am going to be running a truck that has been sitting for the better part of the last 6 months. The oil change milage interval is not up, so can I change the oil and just leave the existing filter in place or should I change the filter as well?
If it were me, I would pull the wire off the fuel shutoff solenoid, and crank it over with the oil that's in it, so that you get oul back into the system. After 6 months, all of the bearings, etc are bone dry. Then I'd go ahead and do the oil / filter change, and again crank it without starting until the filter and oil galleries fill. Then go ahead and hook back up the shutoff solenoid and run it for real.

The paper material within the filter can deteriorate with age. I would say it is more important to change the filter ( if you're a cheep skate), so simple to just do both.
