Truck dies when I let off accellerator pedal quickly
Howdy Folks,
When I bought the truck it died in a parking lot when letting off the accell pedal. It did it again several times. I was able to characterize the symptom then to a fairly quick letting off of the accell pedal. It didn't happen again until abount a week ago (30k and 2 years later, more or less) - same circumstances. It now happens consistently unless I let off the throttle smoothly - read not quickly. I sat in the driveway and went thru the paces and was able to perfectly reproduce the problem every time I got off the throttle quickly. There are no other symptoms I can correlate - no codes, no lights, etc. The truck is original except for Banks TC, improved exhaust, K&N air filter, replaced injectors and return lines. Current miles is just under 100k. Any thoughts?

Sounds like your injection pump is heading south. The governor is sticking. You may be able to temporarily treat the symptoms and delay the inevitable with an overdose of Stanadyne Lubricity Formula (Check's in the mail, Fred ), but if you still have your original pump, you're about due for a rebuild. MWFI and DIS are recommended sources for rebuilt injection pumps.
Re: Truck dies when I let off accellerator pedal quickly
I borrowed this from "The Dieselman's Page". OkieGringo
Engine stalls at stops or when depressing clutch
Stalls returning to idle after snapping throttle open. Injection pump problem caused by poor quality or contaminated fuel. Check for presence of water in the fuel--removal of the injection pump governor cover may be necessary to find contamination, but is not advisable unless you have experience. Check idle speed setting and injection pump timing, as well as cold timing advance--timing should advance at least 2 degrees with 12 volts applied to the rear solenoid terminal. Adding Stanadyne's All Season Diesel Fuel Conditioner may cure this problem, but if it persists, or if there is no cold advance, replace the injection pump. Recommend that the Stanadyne All Season Fuel Conditioner be used periodically to prolong injection pump life.
Re: Truck dies when I let off accellerator pedal quickly
Overdose her with fuel treatment from walmart, like two bottles full in a tank, see if that helps some. If it doesn't unfortunatley only permanent fix is a injection pump rebuild. I got mine done for 292 bucks.
Re: Truck dies when I let off accellerator pedal quickly
International told me years ago that there was a symptom they called an "under-running" governor. They described it as the governor can't catch the falling engine rpm until it drops so far the engine dies. I saw it a few times and the only solution was an OH or IP replacement.
I would try the Stanadyne Performance Formula before going to the expense of replacing the IP. I'd fill the filter with it and run a bunch through the IP and then let it set for a while. It that doesn't cure it, your not out many $$.
Re: Truck dies when I let off accellerator pedal quickly
One VERY common cause of this is a bad (failing) stop solenoid. They are replaceable, but undre the top cover. I have done quite a few of these, and they are typically WORSE, much worse, when hot than cold.
Re: Truck dies when I let off accellerator pedal quickly
An update. I dosed the fuel in the second tank with PS (white bottle) at about 10 times the 1 oz. per 3 gallons rate. The first tank was empty as I had just prior to the problem run it dry - to the point of stumbling the motor at a stop light - I switched just in time to keep it running. After a few miles on the dosed fuel the problem seems to be gone. I guess I pulled in a bunch of crud/water/whatever when I ran the first tank dry.....or maybe not and I do have a problem? So I heavy dosed the empty first tank so it's ready to be filled.
Re: Truck dies when I let off accellerator pedal quickly
One thing you might check is teh fuel filter. I find mine acts this way when the filter begins to plug. You might dump that filter and find it has all kinds of crap and maybe even water contamination in it. Fix this before you beh=gin to worry. Otherwise it is what these gusy said...bad pumpor retarded timing or idle RPM set too low possibly,
J.D.
