Truck wont start without Starting fluid

Just bought a 93 F350 with turbo 5 spd. with 130K on it.

The truck will only start if I give it a small shot of starting fluid. Once it starts it runs perfect. I can drive it for an hour and no issues. If i kill the truck it will start right back up with no issues at all. But if it sets for more than 15 minutes it takes another shot of starting fluid to get it going again.

I just replaced the glowplugs. I pulled the batteries out of my 95 powerstroke which i know are good and put in it. I checked the Glow plug controller with a test light and its seems to work. with the key on I checked with a test light that the glowplugs i could reach are getting juice.

I did notice my "wait to start" light doesnt work.

Anyone have any suggestions on to what might be my issue? I'm pulling my hair out here.

Another question. How long do the glowplugs run on a 93 when the truck finally running? My truck was running for 5 minutes, and i used my trusty testlight and the glowplugs were still getting juice.

You have a bad controller or stuck relay and have probably burned up the new glow plugs, they only afterglow a few cycles after startup.

You might have a worn out IP if you can't start your truck after about 15 minutes of sitting after achieving normal engine temps. I had the same problem.

Something I did to check that out is to pop your hood and place a fan in the engine compartment aimed at your IP. When your pump is cooled off, you should be able to start your truck up.

Some people on this sight test with luke warm water poured over the IP (Not Cold Water). If your IP is worn out and water is poured on it, then it should cool off and you should be able to start it.

Also, how long are you cranking your truck over in the morning? These things are notorious for getting air in the lines, which makes for long cranking times.

You can replace your fuel lines with clear ones to look for air intrusion, you might also want to check out your return lines, that plastic can get kind of brittle.
