I have a 1989 F250 4x4 and I'm starting to research Turbo kits. What is everyone's preference and why?
Thanks!

You're going to find that the three available, Banks, Hypermax and ATS, perform about the same. The only major difference among the three is the Hypermax is non-wastegated. Your decision will probably be made based on price, availability, and ease of installation. I have the Banks because that's what my engine builder, DAS of Vancouver BC, sold. If they had sold one of the others, I probably would have ended up with one of those. Here's what I know:
Banks: Most expensive and most complete kit - performs well.
ATS: The most factory looking installation of the three and less expensive than the Banks. After you add exhaust and gauges, the price will come close to the Banks kit.
Hypermax: The least expensive of the three, and I'm guessing, the easiest to install yourself. Kit re-uses a lot of existing parts on your truck. Some say this is the best if you do most of your driving on the highway. The wastegated kits probably deliver better "off the line" acceleration.
No matter which turbo you decide on - you're going to be happy

Of those three, which one affords easier access to the glow plugs next to the turbo?

I have the banks pack and let me just say after i installed just the kit alone it was another truck, then i added the intercooler, more fuel, nitrous, custom air intake...and I ordered DPS injectors. I went with the banks cause it already had everything and i got a little bit of a discount.
First you have to decide if you want a wastegated turbo or a non-wastegated turbo (Hypermax). ATS and Banks are the same price once you buy the crap you need to complete the ATS kit. I have the Banks kit for several reasons. First, it is the most complete system, down to the last nut and bolt (they even give you antiseize and silicone). Second I wanted a wastegated turbo (so that eliminated the Hypermax). Third, I the "sales" person at ATS was rude and I wasn't going to spend my cash with them. So..........Banks it was. The installation was not too bad (especially with just the engine and tranny on a naked frame ). Fourth, Banks actually gives dyno numbers for performace gain. Most think that the numbers are inflated, but ATS and Hypermax both say 50% increase in power. If you do the math, ATS and Hypermax's claims are more bloated than Banks (i.e. 50% increase in power is greater than the dyno number Banks gives). But, I've yet to see a dyno sheet showing this 50% increase. Anyway, that's my two cents.

I like the ATS as that is what came on the Factory Turbos (different outlet and dp, but otherwise the same) and makes for the most OEM looking instalation. Also, you should be able to get parts (and air filters) very easily.
just my 2cents
