Turbo take off

Another post here.

I just came across an ATS aftermarket turbo on a 87 ford 6.9. The guy is parting out the truck and said he would sell the turbo for a few hundred bucks! I didn't think a turbo was in my budget for a little while but I could afford this. I have not seen the turbo or the truck yet and will be checking it out tommorow. He even offered to pull it off the truck for me. I am wondering if this turbo will work with my 92 7.3?

And if it will, what sorts of questions or things should I look for to know that I am getting a working turbo off of a truck being parted out? I am guessing the important parts is the turbo, filter and housing, downpipes, and...???

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure of how many pieces there are to an ATS, but the big pieces will be:

1. turbocharger itself
2. the pedestal that the exhaust side of the turbo bolts to
3. enough exhaust piping to get from both engine exhaust manifolds to the pedestal
4. downpipe (exiting turbo exhaust side and getting down below cab)
5. intake hat that bolts to the engine's intake and accepts boost air
6. turbo intake plumbing/filter setup (this should have a CDR valve adapter somewhere)
7. block-off plate for CDR hole in rear of intake manifold
8. some oil lines/adapters for oiling the turbo and for letting the turbo oil return to engine

I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm missing anything.

I'd buy it right up. theres a guy on ebay that sells rebuild kits for under 100 bucks for them. I bought a kit from him, they are very simple to rebuild, and if you want he will balance the shaft and impellers for free, you pay shipping.

I haven't tackled a project like this before so I am wondering what the difficulty level might be? If I pay a shop to do it, I imagine it would be expensive. How long might it possibly take to do with two people working on it? I am heading out to look at the turbo etc. in a few hours.

thanks for all the help so far.

Here are the parts diagrams for the 085, 088 and wastegated versions of the ATS turbo systems. They should give you a good idea of what parts should be there.
