Turn off with less than 1/4 tank and it won't start back up (Seems like air in fuel?) Wait overnigh

Turn off with less than 1/4 tank and it won't start back up (Seems like air in fuel?) Wait overnight or turn it over for a couple minutes with the starter and it goes (Seems like it's getting gas again).

Any ideas on a fix other than banging on the starter or keeping greater than 1/4th-1/2th tank of gas in it at all times? Any way to prime these things?

Waiting overnight or until the engine is cool also fixes the problem.

Re: Turn off with less than 1/4 tank and it won't start back up (Seems like air in fuel?) Wait over

My 91 idi cuts out a little before 3/8 of a tank. I would think that your problem is a broken off fuel pickup tube. If it runs and doesnt die when you keep it full, then its definitly the pickup tube. You said if you let it cool, it starts back up. This conflicts with the above idea. Does it just die right out or sputter a little? These fords seem to have problems with the tube breaking off.

Hope this helps,
Anthony

Re: Turn off with less than 1/4 tank and it won't start back up (Seems like air in fuel?) Wait over

As Anthony stated possibly 2 problems the tank pickup and a worn out IP...... Worn out IPs will not start hot, will do great cold. If it was starting then stalling with a hard start then it could be air in the fuel system.

Grab a drink sit down and digest the info on this page........then get back to us with what you think is the problem....

Thanks guys, I've avoided following the conventional wisdom of air in fuel on this forum because as you said my symptoms are opposite -- OK when cold but bad when HOT. Every other problem here is the opposite .

I will read that page and let you know.

another vote for the pickup tube. u used a piece of fuel hose in place with a hose clamp on the top and a bend so it sat in the fuel

I had the same problem. Pulled the bed off and found both suction strainer assemblies laying in the bottom of the tank. Used a copper 3/8"od tee on the bottom of a piece of fuel hose with clamps-don't see any need for strainer in the tank because all of the fuel that goes in is filtered and there was absolutely no trash in the bottom after 265,000 miles.
