U-Haul 1990 E-350, 7.3 IDI

New to diesel and want best information regarding this truck.

Small issues need to address:
Leak in oil reservoir located behind engine mounted halfway down underside with 2 lines from engine tagged with "up" and "outlet".
What is this part? Where can I get one or can I fix the leak?
Rear door seal needs replacement. Where to buy?

Oil/Fuel Servicing-
What is best oil and filters?
Fuel filters and additives?
Is do-it-yourself recommended?

Where can I get specs for this engine as it did not come with an owners manual.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: U-Haul 1990 E-350, 7.3 IDI

first of all, welcome to the site!

im not sure about the leak but im sure others will chime with thier fixes

the rear door seals are available here door seals i think these are what you are looking for

about the oil and service

1) IMO just about any filter except for fram, i use motorcraft fl784 or a fleetguard(cant remember the number)
2) Oil - i use in the psd and the idi shell rotella t 15-40. others use dello, pretty much the same, just a personal preference. u might want to use a lighter grade in the winter depending on how cold it gets where you live.
3) fuel filter IMO again anything but fram. I use napa wix or motorcraft. addatives i ususlly use powerservice available at ur local walmart for ~8$ a gallon. lasts for maybe 150 galllons?
4) i do everything myself and it is all fairly simle unless u have to start to tear down the engine.
5) another thing i would check is the dca or sca addative in the coolent. it is important to protect against cavitation

im sure someone here has a pdf of the owners manual, and the hp/ torque is on a sticker on the drivers side valve cover(if u can see it on the van) i think it is something like 185/320 not sure (someone will correct me)

Is this a van body or a box body?

Your "oil reservoir" sounds like an aftermarket part. This may be some sort of hydraulics run from the power steering pump or from an engine mounted hydraulic pump.

Re: U-Haul 1990 E-350, 7.3 IDI

Dan,

I am going through similar isues as you. I was fortunate to be able to purchase a '94 E-350 17' U-Haul van like yours. I too wondered about the "reservoir". I thought it was a bypass oil filter. I called U-Haul and spoke with someone in Phoenix who worked in the parts room there at the headquarters. He told me it was just a reservoir for additional oil capacity so that they could extend the oil drain interavls to 5000 miles. I still suspect that there could be a filter in there. He just told me to ensure that you drain it at each oil change which I have done. Which brings up a good point, this truck (mine did anyway) will take 16 quarts of oil if you completely drain the aux reservoir and change the engine mounted filter ,and drain the engine crankcase too. I am going to attempt to take it apart one day when I have the whole day to devote to it. I suspect it may be like opening a can of worms. Have you disassembled yours yet? I am worried that once I take it apart that I may need a seal. I inquired about that as well and was told there was none ,just a metal to metal seal held together with the giant band clamp that allows the two halves to seperate. That is what makes me think that there is a filter in there. I guess it could just be to allow the front face to be oriented one way while ensuring that the drain plug is always down

I was also told that alot of the parts for this thing ('94, I can only imagine what it will be like on a '90) are obsolete. Such as some of the prefabricated metal and rubber colant hoses.

I also get the impression that if you need some parts for the cargo box that U-haul will sell them to you if you need them and they still have them in stock. Such as the door seal I think you are inquiring about. Are you talking about the one for the roll-up door?

So far I have changed all the glow plugs. I also will be changing the entire glow plug/top engine harness. I have changed the oil and the transmission fluid and filter. I found a considerable amount of metal in the pan held by the magnet. Mine has 167,100 miles on it and it is not the original transmission. Due to the fact that there is a drain plug on the bottom of my pan, I do not know when the "pan" was off last. So that could be a normal "wear" amount for 100K+ miles or, I am going to need a tranny soon . It seems to shift ok. It does like to get into O.D as soon as it can though.

I need to change both of the lines that go to my oil reservoir. (I'll have to go to a hyd shop and have some made) Change the fuel filter and replace a few of the collant hoses just as a precaution and change both valve covers. I also think that my oil pan gasket is leaking. If it does not stop/slow down after I check all of the bolts for tightness then I am in for a big job . The pan will not come off unless you raise the engine. (A bit of a challenge in an E series.)

Hope this helps you somewhat.

For your door seal, try Trim Lok. There motto is if you have an edge, we have a seal.
