First oil change on the 93. I dumped 2 gallons in and the dipstick reads full. That can't be right?
Heck, My 6.9 eats more oil than that between oil changes.
10 qts--with filter--put in 10--start--let run a bit--shut off--should be right on mark---

Am I off base with the dipstick? Do I trust it or not? 8 qts in the pan and it reads full.
I've been searchingand can't find any info on a dipstick TSB. Mighta been the early PSD's??
Can you read the part number on the dipstick? No matter what your dipstick reads, the normal capacity of engine oil is ten quarts with a normal oil filter. If you use a PSD oil filter, then you use eleven quarts. Post that dipstick part number if you can. Tim
Well, I started it and then added 1 more qt to get it to the F mark. So 9 qts in the pan. Dipstick # 1811229C2.
When I picked this truck up In Bend, Or. The dipstick read 2 qts high. I stopped at an oil change place and had them drain 2 qts out, and check the tranny/diff fluids. Then I drove 1800 miles home. I believe this truck was serviced at a Ford garage, religiously. All wear/maintainence items are genuine Ford parts. Including a Motorcraft PSD filter.

My dipstick number is: 1811229C3. Is it possible that the wrong dipstick tube was used? Or, could the tube have been cut? Can you tell me where on the dipstick that the oil reads? So I can get an idea of how "over" it is.
Lemmie ask a noob question here: A PSD filter screws right onto my IDI engine and holds an extra quart of oil? Does the PSD filter incorporate any anti-drainback valves or extra filtration? Any reason NOT to use the PSD filter over the regular IDI filter? I always buy my filter from the Ford parts counter, and they've never suggested the PSD filter. Also, any problems with 15-40 Delo oil?

The PS filter has the same threading and OD, but it is longer so it holds more oil. It has been said that the filter media is finer to take out smaller particles, but I can't swear that is true...
I use the larger filter on my trucks.

It is a slightly finer media, but the larger area will make up for that so there is not undue restriction. The oiling systems are pretty much the same so there should be no valve issues.
Remember, the dipstick is calibrated to be read with the engine at operating temp. The oil will expand. 12 quarts is too much i'm pretty sure for these engines. I'm pretty sure i always put in around 9 or 10.
