upgrades and apologies

hey guys its been a while since i've been on here. the last post i made i told you guys i was geting ready to sell my 93 4x4 to get a newer stroke. well im still idi till i die because i still have her and just can't part with her. i guess im going on and on like this because i've got the option of selling her and puting whatever i make with about 5G that i already have to get a new one(which like i said before i just dont think i can part with her)or i can invest the 5G in her. so i was thinking of the ATS turbo. idk what you guys opinion on this are and what the differance it would make in my truck would be. the old girl just rolled over to 170000 last night and shes still rining strong but i would like to hear you guys input on wether or not to try and mod her with this many miles or if im good to go. thanks for any help ahead of time guys and im sorry its been so long.

Re: upgrades and apologies

add the mods.
I would go with the banks, easier access to the GPs and injectors. I have the ATS, and as stater here many times. They are all pretty much equal. for 5G you could do some really nice mods! even a few on top of the turbo.

Re: upgrades and apologies

I went by and talked to the guy at my local shop and he told me about $500 on instal so thats not to bad, what i am looking for is the kit that has everything all turbo components and the downpipe included. i looked on the ats website and the kit they have says they just went to a new turbo the aurora 2000. im sure this is a good turbo just wondering if anyone has this particular kit? and you said with the banks kit thers easier acces to the gp's and inj's what exactly do you mean "easier acces"? I know someone on here makes performance injectors for this motor can someone give me a link to where i can find these. well thaks for the help so far guys and please keep the input coming.

Some of the kits position the turbo directly over top one of the GP's and injectors making it very difficult or impossible to get to them without turbo removal.

Re: upgrades and apologies

I've got the Banks on mine and the GP under it was just short of being impossible to get out. I could only use the socket to break it loose, then the wrench and socket had to be removed so the plug could be unscrewed. The hose method is the only way to get it out. All the others were cake to get out. And if they are only charging $500 to install it, do it! I just got done pulling the engine and the turbo is such a tight fit back there. Lots of marks on the firewall from when it was installed (not sure who did it, it was on when I bought it). It should have more room in the Chevy.

Re: upgrades and apologies

I've got a 92 much like yours. I put the turbo on with 170k. She still runs great. I've got the Hypermax system and I put on a 4" straight pipe for exhaust. Runs strong, will pull all day and still gets 15 mpg. Don't forget to open up the intake.

If it were me, I'd keep the 500 bucks and get more mods. That's a new pump or other.

For 5k you can do a lot. Once you start the engine mods, don't forget the tranny....

Have fun with it!

John

Re: upgrades and apologies

For $5k put a cummins in it. That's right, I said it haha. I am contemplating doing this swap in my truck- I know a guy that has an early 90's 12V cummins (with the rotary pump ) for $1200...can't find anything cheaper than that, and it also has the 5-speed with it. Just don't know how much of a pain it would be to do the swap...

Re: upgrades and apologies

I'm pretty sure there are some aftermarket kits set up just for plugging a Cummins in a Ford.

Re: upgrades and apologies

Yeah, like fordcummins.com, but I wonder how well those long inline sixes fit in there compared to our V8s...
This is from the fordcummins website:

Engine kits $450. Including:

Motor Mounts (2) (1980-1997 Ford ¾ ton and 1 ton, must specify gas or diesel) $260
Alternator Bracket: Upper & Lower pieces $70
Upper Water neck, water flows out of the engine into the radiator $60
Lower Water Neck $60
Brochure, included with Engine kit.
Optional Universal mounts: same price as above $260
These mounts will allow you to adjust the installation height of the engine based on the various mounting positions of the mounts to the block. Mainly used on 1979 Fords and older. Also used in Chevy applications.

Re: upgrades and apologies

Call these folks and forget about FordCummins-
http://www.autoworldmt.com
Then do yourself a favor and go here-
www.cummins-conversion.com and do some research.
Buy that 1st generation 12v with the 5 speed for 1200 or you deserve to be smacked.

Re: upgrades and apologies

Hey thanks for the links- and I know, I probably should be slapped if I don't buy it, huh? When I get back from my deployment in 3 weeks that's one of the first things I'm going to check out.
