vibration that comes and goes????

I've been having vibration issues om my truck awhile now. Does not seem to be happening all the time and it comes from what seems to be the rear and the front. I've put new tires on the truck and they balanced great with the most weight on one wheel was 5 oz. I also put dyna beads inside the tire just to help(37" tire.) had the truck aligned and all the the front steering checked out fine. I guess my question is would bad shocks cause this to feel like a tire is out of balance every now and then. I checked the front shock on passenger side and it is shot. So I'm guessing the rest are too. What do you guys think. Its not all the time just sometimes, and happens at all speeds.

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

How old are the u-joints?
If older than 60,000 miles, replace them.
Replace the shocks, it is cheap.
Remember, nothing will last forever.
Many on this board do not understand this, some do!

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

I replaced all the u-joint in the front, The rear dive shaft seems to be fine to me. I took the rear driveshaft out and there was no play in the joints at all. I was just wondering if bad shocks were root cause of this. I'm buying new ones but maybe I was overlooking something else simple. Just curious, getting ready to make trips back and forth to West Virginia to go atv riding at Hatfield Mccoys.

Either you do not know how old the U-joints are, or you don't want to answer.
Like I said, some believe parts will last forever.
Blow the dust of your wallet, buy some parts, shocks & u-joints.
1/3 of a new truck payment

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

Do the shocks for now.

Once a wheel starts bouncing it keeps bouncing if the shocks are bad.

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

The next time it starts happening, pull over and check the temperature of the front brakes. If they are hot you will likely feel the heat right through the hubcap.
I had a caliper which was siezing intermitently which would drag the brake; and when it heated up, it felt like a tire with a ply separation. Once you let the brake cool down for ten or fifteen minutes, it would be fine again. It might not sieze again for weeks.
Damdest thing. If it hadn't happened to me, I never would have believed it. The soloution for me was new "professional grade" pads, calipers, & rotors. It has rolled smooth ever since.
Just a thought.

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

You stated you replaced all the universals in the front......this vibration is in 2wd correct, highway speeds. I go with shocks...first.

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

yea it does it in 2 wheel drive. I'm ordering my shocks today, and I'll see if that helps. Also I will have to check the brakes next time it happens. Really never heard of that before but it is worth a shot.

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

I chased a high speed vibration for 2 years... It ended up being the tires. I bought new tires and it's smooth again. Looking at the tires I saw nothing wrong, neither did other shops that specialized in front ends, tires, drive lines.

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

Just found the bad when hot caliper on my truck. What a pain to find!
I would go shocks, and u-joints. both are cheap, and then you know they are good.
Did you take the drive line apart? maybe it needs to be balanced?

Re: vibration that comes and goes????

my shocks will be here tomarrow hopefully. I thought about having the driveshaft balanced. I will install the shocks and see what happens then if no improvement I will go ahead and replace the the u joints in the rear and have the the shaft balanced. Thanks for all the info guys.
