Which way to go?

Guys I'm posting this because I think this is best site for help about our beloved idi's. I hope not to incur wrath because of what I'm considering. My 93 turbo is using oil at a rate of a quart every 80 to 100 miles. I've tried several solutions such as replacing the cdr valve,rear main seal,and even the turbo.I've looked into parts prices and for a through overall including sleeving the block, it appears that it will cost $3500+ with me doing the labor. I am also considering installing a cummins. I know that this is not a popular subject on this site, but I respect your opinions and wanted to hear your views on which way to turn. If I go the rebuild route, I would appreciate some pointers on that also. It gave me a little more hope to stay with a idi when I read the message from Mr. Bean about another possible source of stage 1 injectors as I also live in Tennessee. Thanks in advance! Lee

Any chancd you are loosing oil from the external oil cooler?
There is two bigold "O" rings that are exposed to oil on the inside and the bottom of your truck on the other.
They often crack and start leaking. Dropps out the bottom, flies off down the bottom of the truck and makes you think the engine is burning it.
It is what the oil filter screws into.
I got a bunch of picutures of a dissassembled one on the site.

86 F-350 2-wd, Crewcab longbed with 90's 7.3 turbodiesel, 5 speed with transfer case for 4-wd, 3.55 rear end, Ranch-Hand rear bumper with welded on receiver hitch, leather seats, custom leather steering wheel, complete AC conversion (not modified R12 componets, works GOOD), 40G tank, holley red fuel pump, ATS upgrades, Racor fuel filter, tinted windows, good rubber, all gauges replaced, wood dash insert holding aftermarket gauges, Kenwood stereo. Needs some body work and paint, but a solid daily driver. Has been my daily driver for last few years. Mileage unknown due to the speedometer change. Truck bed is from a newer model truck. Items in the bed come with the truck and include a 40 gallon tank (not hooked up), airflow tailgate and service ramps.

First you need to tell us how many miles are on the truck and how long you plan on keeping it. $3500.00 for machining and parts seems a little on the high side, if you are going to do some of the labor yourself. Some of these local machine shops do a pretty good job and will assemble the hard part of the engine for you, if you take it out and put it back in. They are also reasonably priced and you know where to go to if you have any problems. You said you have already replaced some parts so part of the expense is already paid for.

Guys, thanks for the replies. The lowest price that I have received for machine shop sleeving for a block was $80 per hole. The engine has 220 thousand+ miles. I'm not sure of the care it had before I got it. It had 140 thousand on it when I bought it. I plan on keeping the truck from now on. I want it in shape for any road trip I might need to make. Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Lee
