Re: well it running now''''BUT

If you can isolate the puff to one cylinder, you may want to remove the valve cover and inspect the rocker/assy for bent push rod. Did you adjust the timing at all.....black usually means too far advanced. Have you got clean fuel and filter with a healthy dose of additives. When engine is just started cold, remove the timing advance wire, listen and watch for smoke, tell us results.

Re: well it running now''''BUT

Find and fix the source of the puddle and try cracking the injector lines open to see if the miss goes away.

Re: well it running now''''BUT

I wouldn't say I had a miss till teh fuel leak was fixed adn the truck ahd been driven gentlya few miles to purge all teh air out. AFter that, if youc an isolate a dead cylinder, first swap that injector to one you know is firing and see if the miss stays with teh piston or follows teh injector. Now you can isolate a miss this way...crack the injector line about 45* or slightly more with the engine running at idle. You should notice a significant RPM drop at every cylinder, which should be approximately the same. If one cylinder's fuel is taken away and it makes no difference...it has a dead injector or bigger internal problems. If fixing teh leaks and teh injectors doesn't work, pull the valve cover and check out the suspect cylinder. Borken valve srings, bent push rods, and dropped valves were not uncommon with 7.3s due to insufficient oil changes or lack of lubrication due to positive valve seal design. Have a great day.

Re: well it running now''''BUT

greetings have you set the timing static at 0 and does the truck rattle very loud
is there a elect timing advance wire i haven't ever seen 1
you can also test the timing advance of the pump by excellerate the motor to around 1400 and with a long screwdriver mechanically push in the lever on the drivers side of the pump that is the timing advance unit it should change if it does not you got a problem in the pump
if it does it took you 2sec
also make sure you get the spring back in the lever if it falls out
a dab of grease will hold it in place until you get back on the sping and throttle lever

Re: well it running now''''BUT

Have you checked your fipl? Have you changed your fluid and filter lately? Does your speedo and tach work flawlessly?

Re: well it running now''''BUT

You say trans does not go into OD at high speeds, have you tried gently applying the brakes while driving to see if the RPMs go up 200-300 rpm indicating the OD is unlocked when brakes applied as required.
