What's the easiest way to get the turbo off a turbo IDI?
I'm trying to pull the turbo out of my truck because I'm installing the ATS upgrade kit, plus rebuilding the turbo (it has a little more play in it than I'd like).
I got all the heat shielding off and the downpipe disconnected. Oil line is removed and both bolts are out of the oil drain/mount thing.
The bolts holding the turbo to the "up pipe" look impossible to access except for the top two, and they're totally rusted anyway. I was kinda hoping to pull the turbo out, up-pipe and all, if I could just get it off the slip joint on the exhaust. I also don't really see how the intake "hat" comes off, does it have to come off with the turbo?
Any advice?
BTW is there any reason I couldn't run a -4 AN line for the turbo oil feed line? The line that's on there seems a bit large, I'm running a -4 AN feed line on my Thunderbird which has a T3/T04E hybrid on it and I have some extra -4 AN fittings laying around.

I have never taken the turbo off my truck, so I can't help you in that area. However, regarding your intake hat removal question, I can. All you need to do is remove the bolt in the center of the intake hat, and then on the turbo center section you'll see a 'clocking ring'- loosen the bolt holding that fast and you can rotate the turbo around as you remove the intake hat. There is only one o-ring keeping a seal between turbo and intake hat. If you don't loosen the turbo clocking ring thing, you will never get that intake off. I figured that out the hard way...

Re: What's the easiest way to get the turbo off a turbo IDI?
i took my turbo off my truck to put my ats stuff on, the bottom two bolts look impossible to take off. But with a little patience and heat you can get them off. I have a torch set up in my shop and what i did is carefully heat up the collecter where the two bottom bolts go through and they turned right out. Also if your putting a new exhaust housing and wastegate on it, the bolts that bolt the wastegate to the exhaust housing on mine took a 5/16 12 point socket and make sure its a good Quality socket.

You may need an obstruction wrench to reach those ( C or S shape ) or a socket on the end of a stack of woble extensions from underneath.
Get a can of Aero Kroil and soak the daylights out of the rusty fastners for a day or so and they'll give you a lot less grief coming out.
I used a 6AN aeroquip line for mine, I would think a 4 would be OK. Just measure the inside of the factory oil pipe and see if the 4an is that or better.
