A what's it worth thread-7.3 engine

Hi all,

I work at a junkyard, and an '88 f250 with a 7.3/c6 just came in. The guy selling it reported that it has some fuel leaks but runs. I put a couple of good batteries in it, and I only succeeded in getting it to run for a few seconds with ether. The injectors are leaking, it looks like between the upper part where the fuel return hose is and the lower part that's screwed into the cylinder heads.

When it did run, it seemed to run smoothly with no knocks, but it only ran for a few seconds and at a fairly high speed, which might disguise any misfires or dead cylinders.

I have no idea how many miles this truck has, as it has a 5 digit odometer. I'm considering buying the engine or engine/trans, but I need to know approximately what they might be worth.

I just paid $300 Canadian for an IDI 7.3 that has been sitting in a barn for 2 years. I could have added a tranny for $500 total, but it was a 2wd, I needed 4wd.

Eesh, maybe I ought to leave it alone then. Either that or you got a great deal-I was under the impression that they were worth more than you paid for a core, and more yet for a running engine.

I think I did get a good deal running or not. I was told he could get 200 dollars for the core. I took a quick check on ebay at remanufactured short blocks, and all of them were over $1500. Now I'll have an even better deal on my hands if the thing will run with minimal repairs!

I can get this for about $80 or so with tax, so I'll probably get it. The transmission will be about $30 more.

I work at the junkyard this truck is in, so I get half price.

Question reasonbly priced core/working 7.3idi & E40D

Guys,

I could use donor long block and tranny, since my wife has been in & out of the hospital since early January '06 my F350 with with 678K miles hasn't had as much daily driving, hospital parking lots cater mainly to windup/compact cars, with no room for full size crew cab pick ups. I figure with the nearly 2 year down time I may be needing to R&R the engine &/or the tranny, it would be nice to do the work myself ahead of time. Then I would know what I've got & be ready to go.
We have horses & livestock & have had to evacuate for both the SoCal '03 Cedar fires & the '07 Witch Creek fires, we've got 2 trucks & 2 trailers, now, after almost not being able to make a return trip for the rest of our horses.
But, I need my truck to be solid enough to 'get out of Dodge' when the fires or flash floods get out of hand.

thanks for any help/suggestions.

jerry

Well, I guess I better pull it. The sucky thing is, I'm off on Fridays and Saturdays. This Friday I'm scheduled to have a liver biopsy to find out why my liver is enlarged along with some very high levels of liver enzymes. I'll be recuperating the rest of Friday and Saturday (they say you can easily start bleeding from the liver if you overdo it after a biopsy).

I can get the truck held back in the processing area so that it won't get taken before I get a shot at it, but almost 2 weeks is kinda long to do that. I dunno...

Hope your surgery goes well.

I think you could get that sucker out in a day if you really tried. Might have to get the cutting torch out :P

Good luck!

Thanks, I just hope it's not cancer of the liver. Both of my parents died of cancer (not liver), so I'm somewhat at risk.

Anyway, I'd certainly expect to get it pulled in a day. I'll probably pull the c6 with it to simplify things. We have big rolling A frames with chain hoists to pull motors, so I won't be struggling with a cherry picker in the gravel.

By the way, does a c6 behind one of those engines have a different bellhousing, or did international make the ford 7.3's with big block ford bellhousing bolt patterns? Either way, the transmission will probably be worth grabbing.
